This is what the voices we brought into this chamber,
00:05
the voices of our constituents, red states, blue states,
00:07
the voices of Democrats and Republicans,
00:09
Republican governors, Democratic governors,
00:12
we brought all the people that are saying no,
00:14
this is a moral moment, not left or right, right or wrong.
00:18
And so I tried over the last 25 hours and one minute
00:25
to center the conversation back
00:26
on what will we do of good conscience.
00:30
People who are saying I serve this country,
00:33
I risked my life, shouldn't be able to keep my job.
00:35
People are saying this country once made itself
00:38
the envy of the world because we invested
00:39
in high quality education for every child.
00:41
I don't like what's going on
00:43
at the end of the Department of Education.
00:45
People are saying I worked harder than I ever have,
00:48
but the prices on everything in my life are getting higher.
00:51
People who are saying that the America I learned about
00:53
in school, the one where people's rights are protected,
00:55
the people are saying that why are we yet again
00:57
going through another healthcare battle
00:59
that threatens millions of people,
01:00
the people are saying that I'm worried
01:01
about the financial security and the future of my country,
01:04
the voices of folks.
01:06
And so I end by saying simply this,
01:09
where I started was John Lewis.
01:12
I don't know how to solve this.
01:14
I don't know how to stop us from going down this road.
01:16
Chuck Schumer has now told me that they're greasing
01:19
the skids to do these things.
01:20
I'm sorry, but I know who does have the power,
01:26
the people of the United States of America.
01:30
The power of the people is greater than the people in power.
01:33
It is time to heed the words of the man
01:35
I began this whole thing with, John Lewis.
01:38
I beg folks to take his example of his early days
01:42
where he made himself determined to show his love
01:45
for his country at a time the country didn't love him,
01:49
to love this country so much, to be such a patriot
01:51
that he endured beatings savagely
01:53
on the Edmund Pettus Bridge,
01:55
at lunch counters, on freedom rides.
01:57
He said he had to do something.
02:01
He would not normalize a moment like this.
02:04
He would not just go along with business as usual.
02:08
He wouldn't know how to solve it.
02:10
But there's one thing that he would do
02:12
that I hope we all can do
02:13
that I think I did a little bit of tonight.
02:15
He said for us to go out and cause some good trouble,
02:25
necessary trouble, to redeem the soul of our nation.
02:31
I want you to redeem the dream.
02:33
Let's be bold in America, not to mean and degrade Americans,
02:39
not divide us against each other.
02:41
Let's be bolder in America with a vision
02:43
that inspires, with hope,
02:46
that starts with the people of the United States of America.
02:50
That's how this country started, we the people.
02:53
Let's get back to the ideals that others are threatening.
02:55
Let's get back to our founding documents,
02:57
that those imperfect geniuses had some very special words
03:00
at the end of the Declaration of Independence.
03:02
It was one of the greatest in all of humanity,
03:04
declarations of interdependence.
03:07
When our founder said we must mutually pledge,
03:10
pledge to each other our lives,
03:13
our fortunes, and our sacred honor,
03:16
we need that now from all Americans.
03:20
This is a moral moment.
03:21
It's not left or right, it's right or wrong.
03:29
It's getting good trouble.
03:31
My friend, Madam President, I yield the floor.
04:05
Madam President, Madam President, thank you to the pages, thank you to the parliamentarian
04:14
staff, thank you to the clerks, thank you to the doorkeepers, there are so many people
04:18
that make this place special, I kept you up all night, kept you up 24 hours, I just want
04:22
to say thank you.
04:23
Thank you, everybody.
