Good afternoon, my name is Phil Hewitt, Group Arts Editor at Sussex Newspapers. Really lovely
00:06
this afternoon to speak to Sarah Roberts. Now, Sarah, momentous times really, because
00:11
you are embarking on your debut tour, stand-up tour, with a comedy show called Silkworm,
00:17
and you're heading to Brighton, which is lovely. But debut tour, that's significant, isn't
00:21
it? That's really important.
00:22
Yeah, yeah, thank you so much for having me. It definitely feels significant. It feels
00:29
really nice to be, especially coming back to Brighton, I did a really nice competition
00:36
at Comedia, their new act competition a couple of years ago, and I was a finalist, so it
00:43
feels really nice to be back in that space doing my own tour, like a nice full-circle
00:48
moment.
00:49
I was asking about the expectations for this debut tour, and you were saying really lovely
00:53
that really you just want people to be there and you want them to laugh and have fun. It's
00:57
as simple as that, isn't it?
00:59
Yeah, I mean, that's kind of the reason why I'm doing it, is just to squeeze all of the
01:06
fun out of this show, which I loved doing in Edinburgh. But I've now added some extra
01:15
fun bits. Yeah, to kind of like bring it back to life a little bit. Yeah, so I'm really
01:21
excited about that.
01:22
I know, it sounds so intriguing. You're talking about some quite serious things, but obviously
01:26
it's going to be very, very funny. But you're talking about our own sort of sense of expectations
01:31
of ourselves and the way we try and identify ourselves, and often it doesn't really apply.
01:37
Yeah. Yeah, it's sort of about like the things that we attach our sense of identity to, whether
01:45
that be like where we're from, or our achievements, or the way that we look. And I guess the show
01:53
for me is definitely about being like, I'm bored of doing this. What if I wanted to be
02:01
just a horrid girl? Yeah, for an hour, I'm just gonna be a horrid girl. Yeah, so the
02:12
show is really fun, but there's definitely like some more, I think someone called it
02:16
like an ode to womanhood. And I definitely feel as though it's, which was very nice.
02:23
I don't feel like it, you know, that was necessarily like anything that was in my head, but it
02:29
definitely was born out of kind of a frustration of, yeah, expectation. And yeah, kind of always
02:39
waiting or wanting to be like a perfect girl and then just kind of having enough.
02:44
Have you shed those expectations now? Are you who you are now?
02:49
I mean, I think so. I don't know. I feel like, you know, even doing the show, taking
02:54
the show on tour, after doing it in Edinburgh last year, it still feels like there's been
03:00
so much growth and change since then. But I guess maybe that's the point. Maybe you
03:05
just never know. And maybe you don't need to attach so much meaning to like who you
03:15
feel like you are, or how you feel like people should perceive you.
03:18
Maybe it's the thing that everyone goes through early on, that they sort of define
03:21
themselves by what's around them and what they like. And then somehow they shed all
03:25
that and they're just themselves, aren't they?
03:27
Yeah. Yeah, I think so. I think people generally get more comfortable with themselves as they
03:32
get older.
03:33
That's the idea, at least, isn't it? Brilliant. Well, congratulations on the debut tour. I
03:39
hope it goes brilliantly. And lovely to speak to you.
03:42
Thank you so much.
03:44
Lovely to speak to you too.
