Households listen carefully as plans to lower living prices emerge

Cost of living is dominating the early stages of the campaign. But for all the promises on grocery and power bills – what can households expect?

00:07both sides today. Outlawing supermarket price gouging sounds great, but it doesn't necessarily

00:13mean we'll all start saving at the checkout. The competition watchdog has just looked at

00:18the supermarkets and found no smoking gun. Nor has making price gouging illegal proven

00:23to be a silver bullet in other countries. It can help in extreme cases, but this is

00:29more about Labor signalling to households that it understands their pain. On energy

00:35bills, anyone hoping for a firm commitment from either side about lower prices will be

00:40disappointed. Both leaders reckon they have the best plan, but neither is sticking their

00:46chin out to say how far prices might fall. More details are slowly emerging about Peter

00:52Dutton's gas plan, but again today we've been told we'll have to wait for the modelling

00:57on prices. Days into this campaign, momentum is with Labor, and that can really matter.
