00:00Where I live, the sound of traffic is incessant. People everywhere, rushing about their lives.

00:13My name is Juliette. I'm an investigative journalist. My magazine sent me to write a

00:20profile of a spiritual community in Northern California and its founder, a man named Swami

00:26Kriyananda. I'd like you to go there, take a look around. If you think they have some

00:30answers, I want you to write an article on it. The community is called Ananda, which

00:36means joy. On first glance, everyone seemed happy, but appearances can be deceiving. Spirituality

00:46and charismatic leaders made me think of cults. But when I met Kriyananda, those thoughts

00:52went away. Spirituality is a free-flowing thing. You're living in grace even though

00:57you may not know it. At the age of 22, he became a lifelong disciple of the 20th century

01:03yoga master Paramahansa Yogananda. In 1968, he inspired a handful of young idealists to

01:10create the first Ananda community. Now Ananda communities are flourishing around the world.

01:20There was a story here, but it wasn't at all what I expected. It was a gathering place

01:26of extraordinary individuals living their lives by an ancient science, both spiritual

01:32and practical. I learned about their teachings and how they put them into action. A completely

01:37integrated life. The physical body, the mind, the emotions. And of course the spirit. It's

01:46an exciting time in medicine, because we now understand that the brain is really much

01:51more changeable than we ever realized. People that meditate regularly feel happy, feel like

01:59it's easy to learn new things, you feel creative, kinder, more empathy toward other people.

02:05Community is really about people. We're able to live simply here because we know that happiness

02:10comes from inside. We can probably define spirituality as, does it make you feel happy?
