Meet Jahan Geet, The Female Dholi

She wanted to drum to her dreams and she did, silencing more than just silly stereotypes along the way. This is the story of 20-year-old Jahan Geet from Chandigarh.   She’s not only among the very few woman dholis in India, she’s also probably the youngest.

00:00Jahaan, go for it!

00:14And playing the drums of a girl was very difficult.

00:17So I always had a question mark in my mind that should I play it and see how it feels.

00:47They accepted me and they encouraged me.

00:56So it was a big barrier for me to break that barrier and tell them that this is our roots.

01:04Like we all know that everyone wants to dance on drums but no one wants to play it.

01:11So it was very important for me to break this barrier.

01:18Oh my god!

01:30Because when my teacher used to teach me and we used to have practice sessions,

01:36my teacher used to always tell me to play it the way boys play it.

01:48It used to be a big challenge for me to ignore all the things,

01:54to ignore what people say and to carry on with your own thing.

01:58It was very difficult for me myself to prove myself in a male-dominated field.

02:17My journey of playing dhol has been amazing till now.
