Why Sonakshi Sinha is not going to tolerate trolls any longer… “Ab bas!”
Transcript
00:00There was just too much bullying, harassment.
00:07They think that they are behind their computer screen so they can really go ahead and say
00:11anything to anyone.
00:17So when I got onto social media, it was all actually really, really positive and for me
00:29it was something very exciting.
00:32And then slowly, slowly these unwanted messages started coming in, people just saying some
00:38random rubbish.
00:39In the last, I think, few years, three or four years, it's just increased at such an
00:46alarming level.
00:47It's impossible for me, a single person, to kind of report so many people.
00:53I finally deleted my Twitter account because I just felt like it had become such a breeding
00:58ground for negativity.
01:17People had no idea what could be done beyond reporting it to a platform.
01:22So I think it's very important to create an awareness about the laws that are in place,
01:28the steps that can be taken, that people are not alone.
01:32To educate them that it's not only women who face harassment, it's men too.
01:36It's not only women who indulge in harassment, it's men too.
01:40So I think it's very important to understand the entire situation and understand what can
01:45be done because it's really sad that so many people just stay quiet and take the crap that
01:52they're being subjected to.
01:54I feel like there should be some etiquette on the internet where, you know, if you cannot
01:58say something to a person on their face, you should not be able to say it online as well.
02:19They think that they are behind their computer screen, so they can really go ahead and say
02:22anything to anyone.
02:25It's not only actresses, I think they don't even leave actors, they don't leave people
02:29from other professions such as sports, they don't leave even very, very senior people.
02:35I don't understand how sad a person's life has to be that if they genuinely don't like
02:41a person, how much time and frustration they must be having to actually make the effort
02:45of going to their page, opening the comments, writing a nasty comment and then going away.
02:52So yeah, I think it's quite sad, the mindset of the people who do all of this.
03:03I think that's the only way to go and that's the only language that I think they understand.
03:08But for me, it did reach a point where I said that, you know what, I need to stop responding
03:14at least online because when it comes to somebody attacking or trolling a celebrity, a reaction
03:21is exactly what they want, which is when I understood that, I realised that I should
03:26not be, you know, responding to them.
03:30So that's when I started actually reporting and blocking people.
03:35And then I realised later on that, you know what, there are certain messages and certain
03:39things that should just not be said to any human being.
03:41I think the process is very, very slow and I feel like they need to have a bit more of
03:51responsibility when it comes to the kind of people that are on the platform.
03:55You know, for me, I had a lot of followers on Twitter, which is about 16 million.
04:01And the kind of trolls, you know, when they get together, they really get together and
04:05they attack you like in packs.
04:07So it's impossible for me, a single person, to kind of report so many people.
04:13And then the whole process of the platform, looking into it and, you know, by the time
04:16they get into it, by the time they remove someone from the platform, that person can
04:21make another account, come back, whatever.
04:29I think right now it's not taken as seriously as physical harassment because, of course,
04:34it is done virtually.
04:36So people take it a bit less seriously.
04:38They think that, you know, that person cannot reach us.
04:41But, you know, today there have been so many circumstances where women have received death
04:47threats, rape threats, actresses or non-actresses, whoever, online.
04:52If it's a picture that they've posted, they've got so many lewd comments on it.
04:56But are we willing to take a chance where, you know, if we don't take this threat seriously,
05:03maybe it does turn into something that is more real and not only on the virtual world.
