This Hollywood legend has been arrested 6 times for her activism –– from opposing the Vietnam War to fighting for climate justice. At the 2021 Golden Globe Awards, Jane Fonda was recognized with a lifetime achievement award.   This is her story.

00:25Every single one of us in this country should be doing all we

00:28can to make this country as equitable and fair and clean and

00:36healthy as it possibly can be.

00:38And we have a long way to go.

00:39So we need everybody to take a stand.

01:02A very important thing I learned from AA, Alcoholics Anonymous,

01:07no is a complete sentence.

01:10I wish I knew that as a girl.

01:11♪ MUSIC ♪

01:28Too few people can succeed as an actress or an actor.

01:31It's a very unhappy business if you've been bitten by the bug

01:34and you can't make it.

01:35And I think there are particular pressures on you when you're the

01:37son or daughter of someone who's already made it.

01:59Do you think that there are already Barbarellas in the world?

02:05That is, this race of free, generous, adventurous,

02:12brave, innocent and naive women?

02:16I hope so.

02:24I was associated with movies that were not truthful in the

02:30sense that they portrayed women not as they really are,

02:34which is very complex the way women really are,

02:36but instead portrayed us quite simplistically as always being

02:40defined by men.

02:41I was 32 years old.

02:43I had a child.

02:44And I was dead.

02:47I was a pretty old person.

02:49I had sort of shriveled up like a dead leaf on the branch.

02:53And I suddenly started to get very mad about that.

03:08I lived in France for seven years.

03:10And it was Vietnam and it was the war in Vietnam who forced me

03:14to ask myself certain questions about America.

03:16And I went back to the United States because I wanted to fight

03:20I care in my country because I care about my country.

03:34I'm not very happy by what the picture is saying to women,

03:37which is if you get a good shrink and a good guy,

03:39everything will turn out all right.

03:40And I don't think that's true.

04:55I have spent a lot of my life being identified by the man that

04:59I was with and thinking that if I wasn't with an alpha male

05:02that I wasn't validated.

05:15When we started 20 years ago, it was so hard.

05:19I mean, there were many counties where we were not allowed to

05:22come in to talk about pregnancy, contraception,

05:29comprehensive sexuality education.

05:43That's another thing that's missing is older women in the media.

06:17I think that women are going to be the answer to what

06:20happens in the future.
