Al Gore's Message to Trump and Youth Climate Activists

Former Vice President Al Gore has two messages about the climate crisis: the first is to young people and the second is to President Trump. Here are both.

00:00Most of the great morally-based revolutions

00:03in human history have been significantly led

00:07by young people.

00:09The movement to solve the climate crisis

00:11and to solve it in time must be led by young people.

00:16The School Strike Movement, the Extinction Rebellion,

00:20other movements that are springing up around the world

00:24are being led primarily by young people.

00:28I would say that you do have a source of moral authority

00:33that older people do not.

00:35You will live with the consequences

00:37of the decisions made today

00:39for far longer than my generation will.

00:43That does give you an opportunity

00:45to speak up insistently, boldly, loudly, fiercely,

00:50and demand change.

00:58I guess, in all honesty,

01:17my message to Mr. Trump would be somewhat different.

01:21I would tell him to resign.

01:23He wouldn't take my advice,

01:24but I've tried to talk with him about climate,

01:28and I thought there was a chance he might listen and change,

01:32but I was wrong, and I have to say,

01:35I think there's very little chance

01:37that he will change in the years ahead.

01:40But I would still give the same substantive advice.

01:44We've got to do more.

01:45We have a global emergency.

01:47It's all hands on deck.

01:49The good news is we have the technologies

01:52to solve this crisis.

01:53They create jobs.

01:55They clean up our air and water.

01:58They save our future.

02:01There's nothing bad about this strategy.

02:05The only thing we need to do is to end the resistance

02:11to them that comes from the fossil fuel companies,

02:14and they're powerful, I understand,

02:16and they have money and political connections,

02:19and they're desperately trying to stop the world

02:23from shifting away from the fossil fuels

02:26that are primarily causing this crisis,

02:28but our future is at stake.

02:31Our children and grandchildren

02:32and 1,000 generations to come,

02:35those of us alive right now,

02:37and particularly heads of state

02:39who have an unparalleled opportunity to effect change,

02:44should recognize that this is the time for bold action.
