This street artist makes massive paintings on nature.   Brut filmmaker Jessey Dearing followed him as he worked on his latest project in South Beach, Miami. Meet SAYPE.

00:00I wanted to create the biggest human chain in the world and painting on

00:05trial and enhanced like that to speak about togetherness how it is important

00:31I am here in Miami Beach for the scope art show and I will paint directly on

01:07how are you I'm fine thank you that's cool yeah this is it's a bit chillier

01:12right now but it'll get very sunny and very humid so I'll take this for a

01:16moment all right okay so here we are here we are

01:22when I was 14 I start to painting wall by making graffiti you know and I think

01:41at this time it was to exist in society because you know you are looking for

01:46what you want to be at this age I think and for me I find this tool to express

01:51myself and to let trace behind me you know I'm here I'm here I exist

02:04so we just took some drone picture to know what it's like from the top because

02:09between what I saw in Google Earth and what I'm seeing here this everything is

02:14different so I have to adapt everything's in last minute the drone

02:17came in Europe in 2012 about so I thought oh I can find a new point of

02:24view in the world very easy to get in this artwork that will represent two

02:35hands this little girl drawing this that's me in the future for me but we

02:41don't forget the past generation because they are included involved in this human

02:47chain this is what I will create here this is a traveling project you know I

02:53started in Paris in 2019 so we're traveling all around the world to make

02:59this biggest human chain to speak again how it is important to be together this

03:05is the first project which is called beyond walls that I work on I've got

03:10another series which is called human story and I used to paint children all

03:15people most of the time to speak about the different question that I have and

03:20last series that I have is called trash and I used to paint huge West everywhere

03:25to speak about our link with nature and with consumerism

03:35we are waiting for the technical meeting so it is at 10 so we are ready to bring

03:40the stuff there and we will start them to work there's a lot of wind that will

03:46be hard to manage for me but again the the sand is easy so I think that will

03:50not blow away so so quickly the thing is as you can see there's a lot of bird

03:55everywhere so I think that would make a lot of trace on my on my frisco we work

04:02with nature all the tracks we need to remove them okay and that's I will say

04:13I can't remove the tracks because of the lifeguards so the lifeguard hut is right

04:17up there so they also use the golf cart but they won't go through here right

04:20from now on they if it's an emergency they might yeah well once we have the

04:25fence up no but at the moment we can't stop them yet yeah so when will the fence

04:30be on tomorrow?

04:35so now we are right something there so I think the artwork will go from this point to this point

04:55As always, it is complicated

04:57because normally we thought that the fence will be there today and we can't

05:03start today because without the fence people will walk on the frisco where we

05:08are walking so we are looking for finding a solution

05:17To create an artwork, it's a long journey

05:20there's a lot of challenge to overcome each project is very specific you know

05:26because the rules of the ground of the surface of the weather of the people

05:30everything is everywhere different so I think the best thing that I have to

05:36learn is to adapt myself everywhere in Colombia in 2018 it was the first time

05:42in South America you know it was crazy for sure I choose the other place you

05:48know at the top of a hill 20 minutes walk and arriving on site the Generato

05:55broke and my compressor broke and I was like all right no pigments no generator you have to

06:01find a way to bring it it was you know 12 hours in the south of Bogota I was like oh and you have

06:08to find a way to make it happen and it's always like that always like that

06:25What are all these trash cans for?

06:27This is to mix the paint you know we bring pigments water and we mix the paint directly on place because

06:33as it's eco-friendly we can't buy everywhere so it's my own paint so we have to mix it on place

06:40and this is the cook this is the guy who makes the paint

06:51Preparing your canvas?

06:53Exactly because as you see there is an artificial land and they did a very flat thing

06:59and for me it's not that much natural you know and I prefer let it like everywhere in the beach

07:07so we are making as the people do normally I mean to walk on the beach to make it normal

07:12so that's why we are doing this kind of strange thing

07:17It's not my job

07:23We did what 20 projects together now still waiting for the fun part

07:34The real fun part is when you see the first time the picture with the drone

07:38every time you still get the same surprise really that he does it without looking and

07:42when you see it from the top it does the trick every time even for me you know because I didn't

07:47see before what it looked like from the top so I'm like oh this is cool it's bad I don't know

08:01As I paint on a natural surface that makes no sense to use a not eco-friendly paint so

08:07from the very beginning I'm very interested to have a 100% eco-friendly paint which is most of

08:13the time made from chalk and charcoal and I use another natural thing which is called casein which

08:19is a protein of milk my goal is to minimize my impact so the paint will stay between one day

08:25and two months it depends on the growing of the grass of how the surface will move

08:30but it's very ephemeral and I love the idea that I let not trace on nature but I can let trace in

08:38memories you know it was a long process to be sure that I didn't damage nature I did a lot of

08:43tests in the garden of my parents you know on the on the ground and to see again the evolution for

08:49example before that I go to paint in one place I see the biodiversity and I see the how the

08:57ground is now I will go only where the human did something for example when I go to the Swiss Alps

09:05I always use a land which is already used for cause of this kind of stuff and then I put the

09:11cause before that I'm going to cut the grass for me I put it out and I can paint

09:26we are going to the printer because all the project is about making a piece of art to

09:32make an auction and to give the benefits to the association so we have to see if the

09:38framer and the print is as I expect

09:49all right but I think it's going to look very nice when you have a matte photography we're

09:53going to print on matte paper cotton and then this contrast it's the only one available in

09:59the industry the other option would be like using two sheets of

10:09the tricky part is usually these kind of details and the highlights that it doesn't do any bending

10:15all right

10:19we did this project to support an association we make the depolution of this ocean

10:39oh wow the sea cleaners how many meters 150 meters yeah oh wow that's huge 450 feet yeah it was a big one

10:48work on sand right now yeah it is nightmare for me because you know the sand move and I can't

10:55walk on the fresco so I have to manage to make a kind of plan in my head there is a way to fix it

11:00maybe in the sand no that's tricky because all my philosophy is to let the less traces

11:09on nature that I can so it's a little layer so if there was a wind the wrong way if I walk on it

11:15the birds the birds we saw the birds we say oh tied yeah so but it's don't bring food to to the

12:00we're a little bit cool we are starting to map because you know I put some stick of wood

12:04to understand where I am on the ground so we have to put with some metal and to

12:08stick a little bit to map finally to scale the ground

12:12I'm going to check the wind for the following day tomorrow a little bit less 20 knots

12:21This is the big day I have to finish all the painting today so we will try

14:05as it's a funeral you know it's very exciting that we have only two weeks to see it three weeks

14:11it's a very short time and sometimes I think that if I do a mural for example the people think

14:17oh I can go in one year it will be still there in my case you have to come

14:23at the right time if you don't come that will be done

14:31maybe I hope that we will be inspiring for people

14:34we don't need words to understand what I'm speaking about it's universal
