At the Aquarium of La Rochelle, they have a male Zebra shark, so they were looking for a female.
00:25
And since we have a female, we were very happy to let her go
00:29
to mate with the male.
00:45
Zebra sharks live in the Indo-Pacific Ocean.
00:48
They are tropical sharks.
00:50
The three we currently have, which are adults, come from Malaysia.
00:53
When it is born, it is zebra, black and white.
00:55
That's why it's called the Zebra shark.
00:57
It is very distinct, with well-defined stripes.
01:00
And then, when it grows up, it starts to have spots, spots.
01:03
And its coat changes completely around 2-3 years,
01:06
where it becomes yellow with black spots.
01:08
So now it looks like a leopard.
01:10
It is a threatened species.
01:11
It is vulnerable.
01:12
It is its IUCN status, so for the protection of nature.
01:16
It is a species that needs to be preserved.
01:20
That's why we are lucky enough to be able to reproduce it at the Aquarium,
01:24
which avoids taking samples in nature.
01:26
Sharks are currently really threatened.
01:28
There are people who think that if we continue to catch as many sharks,
01:32
that is, 100 million sharks each year that are caught,
01:35
well, we could see the sharks disappear in 20 years.
01:39
So it's really urgent to react.
01:41
Sharks are caught, they are slaughtered, you could say,
01:45
for their fins, because it is a very profitable trade.
01:48
The shark is a super predator.
01:50
It is the one who regulates, let's say, the ecosystems.
01:53
So it has a fundamental role.
01:55
And if sharks were to disappear,
01:56
it would be the entire marine ecosystem that would be disrupted.
