Pro-Democracy Protesters in Hong Kong Want Americans to Pay Attention

Today marks the 70th anniversary of the Communist Party's rule in China. Protestors in Hong Kong opened up about risking police violence to stand up for democracy — and they want Americans to pay attention.

00:15They used their batons, their pepper spray against people who just happened to be travelling on a train.

00:20And they stormed into the train, they beat people up, and then they get out.

00:24They did not do any arrest to those people.

00:30We are in Paris. We have Hongkongers in Berlin. We have Hongkongers in Strasbourg, in London.

00:42All of us, all Hongkongers are calling for unity, for solidarity among Hongkongers around the world,

00:50and to call for local governments to act, to enact policies,

00:55to offer relief to freedom fighters at the other side of the world.

01:20to pass the Hongkong Human Rights and Democracy Act.

01:51Hongkongers calling for unity

02:04It is difficult to leave Hongkong if the authorities have targeted you.

02:10They would use fabricated or not charges on you to get a court order on you,

02:19such that they can take away your passport, they can ban you from leaving the country.

02:23We do not announce our plans, we do not tell the world where we're going tomorrow, next day,

02:28or which flight we're taking, so we do not draw attention to ourselves before we make the trip.

02:33Hong Kong protests

02:45We hope that the situation would resolve sooner rather than later,

02:49but with the current response from the Hong Kong government and the Chinese government,

02:53we don't see the protests ending any time soon.

03:03We're sending a message to the world that this is a cry from the people of Hong Kong.

03:08It's not only about us, it's about the world.

03:12It's about people being oppressed, not being about Hongkongers.

03:16It's about places where atrocities are happening.

03:21Maybe it's people being oppressed in China, maybe it's the Uyghur people, maybe it's in other places.

03:26We're talking about people being oppressed and you need to find a way to get your voice heard.

03:32And we stand together and we would like to fight against any atrocities

03:36or human rights violations in the world together.
