00:22We never talk about

00:29We never talk about

00:31the fact that systemic racism

00:33is the root cause of health care disparities.

00:36And it is imperative

00:38that we teach medical students

00:41and those in the health care profession

00:43as learners, to understand

00:45systemic racism

00:47before asking them to

00:49to diagnose it in practice.

01:09So the White Coats for Black Lives hashtag

01:12and also organization really just says

01:17we in the healthcare system with our white coats

01:19are going to amplify the voices of the marginalized.

01:24I think that during the time of COVID-19

01:28where we were quarantining,

01:30there was this uncomfortable sense of isolation

01:35where for all of the right reasons,

01:38we were asked to stay at home.

01:40But then when I saw the world

01:43and specifically the medical community

01:46show up in such a strong way,

01:49it made me feel like I wasn't alone.

01:53In a lot of ways, it actually made me feel more connected

01:57at a time where I was the most isolated.

02:13Because the world sees me as a black woman,

02:30statistics show I am less likely to receive optimal care.

02:34I am less likely to receive optimal pain management.

02:37I am less likely to receive optimal time

02:40spent with my physician.

02:43Because the world sees me as a black woman,

02:46health outcomes are different for me.

02:48I think that we've known that health disparities

02:51in this country have been bad for years.

02:54And we also know the solutions to fix them.

02:57Increase diversity in healthcare.

02:59I think that there's this underlying assumption

03:01that it's going to happen naturally, but it's not.

03:08So of the many things I'd want to fix in healthcare,

03:12I really want there to be targeted initiatives,

03:15mandates from a national level, from a local level,

03:20from a school level on increasing diversity.

03:23Starting that pipeline as early as elementary school,

03:26because I firmly believe that

03:28you can't become what you don't see.
