00:00How bad do you think Sheffield is for traffic congestion?
00:04Horrendous.
00:05What's the worst thing about it?
00:08Well, it doesn't matter which main road you come into Sheffield.
00:13There's just lines and lines of traffic.
00:17Lines and lines.
00:19I don't actually drive myself while I'm here, but when I've come with people,
00:25you know, especially Ettlesall Road and in through Woodseeds.
00:31Is it worse than other places, do you think?
00:33Yes.
00:35I think there are parts of it that are very poor.
00:38Going on Penistone Road, for instance, in the evening,
00:42out toward Uterbridge and that way is very congested.
00:46Sometimes it can take ten minutes to traverse a very small distance.
00:54But when we come into town, we tend to park, as we have done today,
00:59in Eldon Street, so we don't tend to use the big roads into Sheffield
01:03and we just walk most of it.
01:05Do you think Sheffield's any worse than other big cities?
01:07No, no, no.
01:10We used to live in Birmingham and Derby and they were just the same as here.
01:16I don't think there's any difference, really.
01:19I think it's very bad, particularly at peak times.
01:23I mean, I travel to a friend's house and I live at High Green and she lives at Dove
01:29and it can take anything between three quarters of an hour and two hours to get there,
01:33depending on the time of day.
01:35So I do think there's certain times when it's ridiculous.
01:38Is it any worse than other places?
01:40I haven't lived in other places for a long time, so probably not.
01:44Is there anything you'd like them to do to improve it?
01:47I think the traffic light system.
01:49There's so many traffic lights and they're not always in sync
01:53and I think that causes a lot of backing up of traffic.
01:56I mean, I don't know if you've come down from, say, Grenyside,
02:00there's, I don't know how many sets of lights there are,
02:03but if one or two are out of sync, you just get blocks going back and back and back.
02:07I think the parking's a problem.
02:13Congestion, one-way systems, I don't think everybody understands them entirely,
02:19but yes, I think it could be improved.
02:22Do you think there is a problem with congestion?
02:24Yes.
02:27As I say, you've only got to look around.
02:32People tend to park their cars away from the city centre
02:37and then catch public transport.
02:41I think at certain times of day the traffic congestion is really bad around Sheffield,
02:45especially on the ring road and where there's loads of traffic lights
02:48and they don't align properly, so you just end up stopping all the time
02:51and it's really difficult to follow it round.
