According to studies, 70-80% of women can have myoma.
00:10
What is it and how does it affect the health of women?
00:15
That's what we're going to find out here in Seyni Doc.
00:17
We'll be joined by Dr. Anafe Orbigoso-Gloria, an OBGYN.
00:24
Good morning, Dr. Anafe. Welcome back to Rise and Shine Filipinas.
00:27
Good morning.
00:29
Magandang umaga, Rise and Shine Filipinas. Magandang umaga, Dianne and Audrey.
00:35
For everyone's information, Doc, what is myoma?
00:42
Myoma is an abnormal muscle tissue growth in the uterus.
00:50
It's a tumor that grows and forms in our uterus.
00:56
It occurs in almost 80% or 8 out of 10 women.
01:08
Alright, Doc. There are different types of myoma. What are the differences?
01:16
Myoma starts in the uterus, in the muscle.
01:20
When it grows, it can be a submucosal.
01:28
It stays in the muscle, but it stretches the muscle.
01:32
It's intermural.
01:34
When it comes out, it's called a subserous.
01:39
Myoma can also grow in other parts of the body.
01:45
Sometimes, it can go down to the cervix.
01:49
That's what we call a cervical myoma.
01:54
What is the age of myoma?
01:58
What are the symptoms of myoma?
02:01
Is there a chance that there are no symptoms?
02:04
Or are there different symptoms?
02:07
It depends on what type of myoma a woman has.
02:13
As we mentioned, there are different types of myoma.
02:17
Depending on the age group, myoma is more likely to be diagnosed
02:26
at the peak of reproductive age, which is around 16 to 44 years old.
02:34
But it starts when a woman is still young.
02:37
It grows slowly.
02:40
When it grows, the first symptom is bleeding,
02:47
especially when it's near the lining of the uterus.
02:52
When the myoma grows, the muscle of the uterus is stretched.
02:59
When it grows, it can cause pressure symptoms.
03:04
It's like carrying a person.
03:07
As it grows, it adds other organs to our uterus,
03:13
and it becomes heavier.
03:16
That's what causes pelvic pressure.
03:19
That pelvic pressure can cause difficulty in urinating,
03:24
difficulty in urinating,
03:26
and even if there are no symptoms,
03:30
it can cause difficulty in urinating
03:33
because the myoma blocks where the baby should grow
03:38
or where the uterus of the man should pass.
03:43
What are the possible symptoms of myoma?
03:49
According to studies, it's more common in those who have it.
03:55
If you have a myoma,
03:58
there's a high incidence of myoma.
04:03
Other than that, there are studies that depend on the gender.
04:10
For example, it's more common in blacks compared to Americans.
04:17
There's also an effect called endocrine-disrupting chemicals.
04:23
Those are the chemicals that can induce the root of myoma
04:28
in our food, in our body.
04:33
Although, there's also a study that those who smoke
04:38
don't have a myoma that often.
04:41
Doctor, when it comes to treatment,
04:44
what are the options here in the Philippines?
04:49
Of course, we address what the symptoms are.
04:53
When it comes to bleeding,
04:55
usually, we address that first.
04:58
If there's an anemia, we give the medicine.
05:01
So, we start with the medical treatment,
05:04
especially if you want to save or you don't want to have an operation.
05:10
The hormonal treatment is also included.
05:13
We start with the injection of hormones
05:16
or sometimes, the hormones that we take.
05:19
Then, we resort to an operation.
05:23
In terms of operation,
05:26
it depends on the age of the patient,
05:31
if he or she is already a completed family
05:35
or if he or she doesn't want to have an operation.
05:37
Of course, it depends on the patient's desire.
05:41
For an operation,
05:43
it can be done inside the uterus or the myoma by hysteroscopy.
05:53
It can also be done by laparoscopy.
05:56
And then, most often, it's an open surgery.
05:59
Meaning, they will really open it and remove the tumor.
06:02
And then, we also have robotic surgery to remove tumors.
06:08
Alright, doctor.
06:09
I wonder if there are preventive measures that a woman can do
06:12
to avoid myoma.
06:16
That, definitely, we cannot say.
06:19
But, of course, we always mention a healthy lifestyle.
06:23
Just in case, we can stop the effect of endocrine-disrupting chemicals.
06:31
So, meaning avoiding processed food
06:34
and be cautious to what you apply to your body.
06:37
It has to be more natural or organic.
06:40
Even your hair products, your makeup, or whatso.
06:44
And then, of course, it's also good that we have a check-up.
06:48
So that we can see, even if we don't have any symptoms,
06:53
even if it's just once a year,
06:55
we visit our friendly OB-GYN
06:58
to assess the risk factors
07:01
and the conditions that should be prevented in our age group.
07:05
There, it's better to have a check-up for prevention.
07:08
Well, thank you very much for all the information that you shared with us this morning,
07:12
Dr. Anafe Orbegoso-Gloria,
07:14
from Libre Intermed for our viewers.
07:17
Thank you very much.
07:19
Thank you very much to all of you.
07:21
And good morning.
