PTV Sports is back! We will talk to Girl Scout Game Volleyball Program Chair, Kaye Daly.
00:07
Good morning!
00:09
Hello, good morning!
00:10
This will be an inspirational story this morning.
00:14
And with that, Miss Kaye, tell us the story behind Girl Scout Game.
00:20
So Girl Scout Game, we are a non-profit organization built in, we started in 2015 actually.
00:28
So it's our 10-year anniversary this year.
00:31
And we are all women athletes.
00:34
Our founder is two athletes also from Ateneo, Nika Arcelia and Kersanti.
00:43
So they started the group in 2015 not knowing that it will be this big today.
00:50
But it's giving opportunities for underprivileged girls to experience playing sports that are different.
00:59
So we have basketball, volleyball, rugby and football.
01:02
So different sports that they usually don't experience in their community.
01:08
But what was your inspiration for this Girl Scout Game?
01:12
This is a women empowerment through sports that you mentioned for the underprivileged girls.
01:18
So what's the inspiration behind building this GGG?
01:20
Yes, so there are a lot of studies that women are not given as many opportunities as men in terms of sports.
01:27
And a lot of girls usually quit sports because of also body insecurities or you know,
01:37
the typical societal standards of patriarchy or whatever.
01:43
But by doing this, we're able to show the girls that there is a future in sports or values in sports.
01:52
Because all our coaches are all women athletes and all our volunteers are also women.
01:57
So in that way, they can see that there are role models that they can follow after playing.
02:06
Or there are opportunities for girls in that field.
02:10
Because we have a lot of professionals also.
02:13
Former athletes, now engineers, attorneys, and so on and so forth.
02:20
Parter, Kay mentioned earlier that the change of GGG is already big.
02:26
How is it different from the time it was inaugurated?
02:30
So I was telling you earlier that our humble beginnings, we used to do roving sports camps.
02:37
So it's two different modules now because of the pandemic.
02:41
So before, we would go everywhere in the Philippines, partnering up with different LGs and schools.
02:47
So we would just do the trainings in whatever court we have.
02:50
So if there's a court available, we would go there.
02:53
If there's a net available, we would go there.
02:55
But now with different sponsorships with different brands and different partnerships,
02:59
different organizations also are reaching out to us to help financially.
03:05
Or others are also giving volunteers.
03:08
So now, we have a home court in Santa Maria, Bolacan in Sacred Heart Academy.
03:14
And that home court is more equipped to host more camps.
03:19
And that's what we've been doing for the past five years since we started the partnership in 2018.
03:26
Ms. Kay and I were talking earlier and I asked,
03:30
the design of the court here in Sacred Heart is different.
03:34
It's like a work of art.
03:37
It's very artistic, right? It's very colorful.
03:39
That's the first time we've seen that, to meet Megota.
03:42
What's even better is that a WNBA player even visited and played with the players of the Girls' Cat game.
03:47
But tell us, what's the idea behind this?
03:50
Who's the artist behind this?
03:51
And what's the inspiration behind this art?
03:54
So, even before that court was made,
03:58
before, she already had other artworks.
04:00
But this time, Jill, the artist, she designed the court specifically for the Sabrina brand.
04:08
So, you can see what she did for basketball.
04:13
Because Sabrina is also a game changer.
04:16
So, she embodies what we try to do with Girls' Cat game also.
04:22
So, with her creativity, I don't know how they did it.
04:27
But the design of the court embodies Sabrina's recent championships.
04:32
And the girls and the different...
04:37
When you see the court, the drawings of the kids are different.
04:42
The art around the court.
04:46
So, it embodies empowerment, I think.
04:50
And every girl can really make a difference.
04:53
I'm sure the participants of the GGG will be empowered.
04:58
But how do you choose the participants for the GGG?
05:03
Okay, so we have two modules.
05:05
So, before the pandemic, we would go in different barangays and different areas in the Philippines.
05:10
And then from there, we would have partner communities or partner schools.
05:15
Because it gives 10 to 12-year-old girls for a two-day camp.
05:20
So, it's a back-to-back camp.
05:22
We usually do it Saturday and Sunday.
05:24
But now, we do have our GGG club.
05:27
So, to track the sustainability.
05:31
Because usually, before, it's a two-weekend event.
05:35
But now, it's all year round.
05:38
So, we have sign-ups on our website.
05:41
And then, we vet those who signed up.
05:44
So, someone calls from our team to see how interested they are.
05:48
And then, they're with us for a year.
05:50
So, aside from the four camps, before, we used to do it in two days.
05:56
All the sports in two days.
05:58
But now, it's a span of one year.
06:00
So, the next one that we're having now is actually rugby.
06:03
So, they're going to be doing a three-weekend rugby.
06:06
And then, they also have online sessions.
06:08
Online check-in with our coaches.
06:11
To track their development in the sport that's scheduled that time.
06:20
So, I guess online, we have sign-ups on our website.
06:26
So, we do it every year.
06:29
So, the sign-ups.
06:30
It's fun because before, it's a two-day training.
06:34
But now, it's a one-year program.
06:38
And I'm sure our participants are more focused for the GGG.
06:42
Because it's a one-year training program.
06:45
Yes. I'm just curious about your teammates.
06:47
Girl Scout Games started in 2015.
06:49
You've been doing this for 10 years.
06:51
So, how are the pioneers who played in the Girl Scout Games?
06:57
Did they play for the universities?
07:00
In UAT, NCA?
07:01
Or professional?
07:03
Professional.
07:04
Do you have a Girl Scout team that plays in the Philippines?
07:10
Actually, that's our dream.
07:12
That's the motivation for the club.
07:15
To see the sustainability of the program.
07:19
But we do have some girls, I think,
07:22
that started playing in the varsity teams in their schools.
07:26
And then, recently,
07:30
the one with Sabrina, actually.
07:32
They're not part of the club yet.
07:34
But recently, we have a group of girls
07:36
who are part of the camp,
07:38
who were champions in the earlier division
07:42
to play in the national games.
07:45
But only in the sectionals, regionals area.
07:49
So, hopefully, in the near future,
07:52
we'll have products of the GGG
07:56
that we can watch on TV.
08:00
That's our dream.
08:01
To be able to change lives of those children
08:05
in that way.
08:06
To have an athletic scholarship.
08:08
Just like the founders of the Girl Scout Games itself.
08:13
Ms. Gay, do you collaborate with the local,
08:15
both local and private sectors
08:18
for the expansion of the GGG?
08:21
Yes, we do collaborate.
08:23
So, we have partners
08:26
from different NGOs.
08:28
So, they usually ask what we need.
08:30
On our end, for LGUs,
08:33
if they wanted to bring a camp there.
08:36
So, we've done camps all over the Philippines.
08:39
We've done it in Mindanao.
08:40
We've done it in Bacolod.
08:45
All over Luzon.
08:46
So, with different LGUs and different schools.
08:49
So, yeah, we do have partnerships also.
08:52
So, they can just reach out
08:54
and see where they can collaborate with the program.
08:59
Ms. Gay, aside from sports,
09:01
of course, we're also developing
09:03
the hopes and personalities of the girls.
09:05
But what are the life skills
09:07
taught by the Girl Scout Games
09:09
so that they can be a good Filipino
09:11
when they grow up here in the Girl Scout Games?
09:14
Yeah, I think sports play a huge role
09:18
in the development of a person's character.
09:23
So, that's why we want those kids
09:25
to learn the value of sports.
09:27
So, first of all, discipline
09:29
so that they can be goal-getters.
09:32
But at the end of the day,
09:34
it's really about respect with your teammates,
09:37
your respect for your teammates,
09:39
your respect for your coaches
09:40
that are deep-rooted in being a good person.
09:44
So, at the end of the day,
09:45
we're not teaching them sports
09:47
because they're good or they're a good person.
09:50
But we want to teach them sports
09:52
so they can be better individuals.
09:56
What are the future plans of GGG,
09:59
aside from the ones we mentioned earlier,
10:01
to be seen in the big leagues
10:04
like UAAP, NCAA?
10:08
Yes.
10:09
Actually, when we were doing the court reveal
10:12
and Sacred Heart,
10:13
was that two weeks ago?
10:15
Yes, March 15.
10:17
March 12, I think.
10:19
March 12.
10:20
When we were doing the court reveal,
10:22
they made all the core team,
10:24
or our coaches,
10:25
to pull the...
10:41
to have that one court in that one area.
10:44
So, hopefully, in the future,
10:45
we'll have a lot of home courts
10:48
to open up that opportunity,
10:50
not just in that school,
10:52
but in different areas of the Philippines.
10:54
So, hopefully, in the future,
10:55
we'll have one in Los Angeles-Mindanao.
10:58
So, one court at a time,
11:01
one game at a time,
11:02
one girl at a time.
11:03
Oh, I like that.
11:04
That's a good start.
11:05
The court we saw was really nice.
11:06
Actually, there's also one outside.
11:08
Is that part of Girls' God Game?
11:09
There's an indoor and then outdoor court.
11:11
Yes, the indoor and outdoor court
11:12
are part of Girls' God Game.
11:14
And then the field also on the side,
11:16
we also use that for different camps.
11:18
So, in our football,
11:19
we use the field on the side of the court.
11:22
There are several sports included with GGG.
11:25
Do you plan to expand it more?
11:27
We have a lot of sports.
11:29
Yes.
11:31
Sorry to our managing director,
11:34
but I always tell him,
11:37
let's add sports.
11:40
Philippines has been doing very well
11:42
in softball and baseball.
11:44
And that's one sport
11:46
that we're trying to look into expanding
11:49
because a lot of our public schools
11:52
do well in the level.
11:56
Until 15 years old, actually,
11:58
we were able to represent the Philippines
12:01
in the Softball World Cup in 2023.
12:04
But then after,
12:05
the coaches said,
12:06
after 15 years old,
12:07
usually it's hard to raise the level
12:12
to compete on the world stage.
12:14
So, we want to expose
12:16
softball and baseball also,
12:18
the non-mainstream sports
12:21
for other kids to learn.
12:24
We'll look forward to that.
12:25
Ms. Kayne,
12:26
recently, a lot of Filipino athletes
12:29
are participating in the world stage.
12:31
How is Girls' God Game used?
12:33
To inspire these young athletes
12:35
to also be part of the gold medalists
12:38
like Heidlin Diaz,
12:39
of course, Alex Yala,
12:40
we just heard about her.
12:42
So, how do we use
12:43
these achievements of our athletes,
12:45
especially Filipino athletes,
12:46
to help our kids here in Girls' God Game?
12:49
So, what we do with Girls' God Game
12:51
is we separate them in different groups.
12:53
And then those groups are called,
12:55
when there's a camp,
12:57
they have a small placard,
12:59
and they're a team,
13:01
a team for volleyball,
13:03
or a team,
13:04
and then other volleyball players
13:05
that are popular,
13:07
or for example, in basketball,
13:08
the team has a picture,
13:13
and then we also tell them
13:15
their achievements.
13:16
And the other girls get surprised,
13:18
like, oh, really?
13:20
They actually achieved that?
13:22
And they're like,
13:23
pure Filipinas.
13:25
So, I think we use,
13:27
like you said,
13:28
the platform that we have,
13:30
and the recent achievements
13:33
of our Filipino athletes
13:35
to also educate the girls
13:37
that, you know,
13:39
women really can.
13:41
That's beautiful.
13:43
Very empowering.
13:44
Exactly.
13:45
It's March now,
13:46
International Women's Day.
13:48
Exactly.
13:49
And now,
13:50
one last thing.
13:51
Yes, sir.
13:52
Message to your students,
13:54
to all of you who are
13:55
joining Girls' God Game.
13:56
Shout out.
13:57
Maybe some of them
13:58
would like to say something.
13:59
Yes.
14:00
So, to our Girls' God Game team,
14:04
see you at the next camp.
14:06
So, we're going to do
14:07
our next camp very soon.
14:08
And I just want to say
14:09
thank you to our founders also,
14:12
KK Curzon and Nika,
14:13
and our Managing Director,
14:15
Jelly and Mariana,
14:16
and to the core team
14:18
that tirelessly,
14:19
for the past 10 years,
14:21
have been working
14:23
with all the girls.
14:26
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
14:28
And I'm so happy
14:29
that we have come this far.
14:30
And to the next 10 years,
14:32
I hope more and more blessings
14:35
for Girls' God Game
14:36
and more lives changed
14:38
through sports.
14:40
With that,
14:41
thank you so much, Ms. Gay.
14:43
It's such an honor
14:44
that we were with you
14:45
this morning.
