00:02Boxing legend George Foreman is dead at the age of 76.

00:09He was one of the most beloved sports figures in history.

00:11George Foreman indeed was a puncher and a pitchman.

00:14Steve Obermeyer is here with more on his extraordinary life.

00:17It really was.

00:18It's just a sad day in all of the sports world

00:20because George Foreman was a giant in sports,

00:24in the ring and outside.

00:27He was a man who fought with power and lived with purpose.

00:31George Foreman once shook the world with his fists.

00:34Then he warmed our hearts and our kitchens.

00:37This tough kid from Houston rose to Olympic gold,

00:40then to world heavyweight champion.

00:43His furious fists matched his demeanor then.

00:46When he knocked out Joe Frazier in 1973,

00:49it gave us one of the greatest calls in sports history.

00:52Down goes Frazier! Down goes Frazier!

00:57The following year was the rumble in the jungle.

01:00Muhammad Ali knocked him out

01:02and Foreman's air of invincibility was shredded.

01:06He disappeared for a while, became a minister and found peace.

01:11That's when Foreman did something you never see.

01:14He returned to boxing in his 40s.

01:17He was a father to 12 kids,

01:19most named George or some variation of that.

01:22He came back with a bigger belly, but also a bigger smile.

01:26And when he knocked out champion Michael Moore in 1994,

01:30he became the oldest heavyweight champion of all time.

01:33He was 45.

01:35He was a boxer, a father, a preacher,

01:38but maybe most famously, a salesman.

01:41Hi, I'm George Foreman,

01:43and this is my lean, mean, fat-reducing grilling machine.

01:47The George Foreman Grill sold more than 100 million units

01:50and it earned him far more money than boxing ever did.

01:53He may have punched his way into history,

01:55but he laughed his way into our hearts.

01:58And in the end, George Foreman was known less for his knockouts

02:02and more for his comeback, in the ring and in life.

02:06And what he leaves is a legacy of rumbles, redemption and ribs.

02:13And in the end, George Foreman gave us more than knockouts and grills.

02:17He gave us maybe the rarest thing in all of sports, genuine joy.

02:21And that lasts long after his final bell.

02:25Yeah, you know, Steve, you remember,

02:27he was in the shadow of Ali for so long.

02:29Right.

02:30It just sort of changed.

02:31What's crazy is that after he left and he came back,

02:33when he came back, it was like,

02:34it's almost as if he took on Ali's persona

02:37and that's when you found, he found the most kind of success.

02:41I mean, that's when he became beloved in America.

02:44And an entirely different audience, a much younger one, with grills.
