00:00One day it's warm, the next it's cold again.

00:02It's a classic case of weather whiplash,

00:05and while we may adjust quickly,

00:07arborist Michael Holleran says

00:08trees aren't so lucky.

00:10Do we have plants that are waiting

00:12for springtime and warmer temperatures

00:14and will warmer soil temperatures

00:15to really wake up and start actively

00:18pushing growth and blooming and

00:19things like that and when it goes

00:22up and down sometimes those plants

00:24get confused forever. Greens.

00:25This sudden back and forth can also

00:27reveal damage yellowing and browning

00:29of leaves that's been hiding all winter.

00:31What I am seeing a lot of his winter

00:34burn issues so that the cold that

00:36we had in January is really starting

00:38to show itself now with damage on

00:40plant material and the temperature

00:42swings are not the only stress.

00:44Trees are facing.

00:45We're still working through the

00:46drought stress from last year.

00:48The lack of rain we had late in the season.

00:51When a tree is under stress,

00:53it is more likely to develop issues,

00:55whether it be with insects or disease.

00:58So what can homeowners do?

00:59Holleran says it starts with understanding

01:01what's growing on your property.

01:03A lot of people that I meet with

01:06aren't even sure of the species of

01:08trees that they have in their yard

01:10or the species of shrubs that they have.

01:13So it's very hard to to know what to

01:15look out for when you don't know

01:17what you're dealing with.

01:18Experts recommend monitoring trees

01:19for any signs of damage,

01:21watering them during dry spells

01:22and reaching out to an arborist.

01:24If anything looks concerning,

01:25keeping an eye out on your trees

01:27could lead to bigger problems later.
