00:001945, after the end of World War II,

00:04in the Philippines, there was a fierce battle between the Filipinos and the Americans

00:09against the Japanese.

00:11And Manila was almost lost because of the lack of land.

00:15We can see that the Philippines, at that time, ran like a president,

00:21in a bloody, or let's say, a long period of hardship

00:26because the Second World War was almost over.

00:29It was during the Reconstruction Period.

00:31A lot of Filipinos suffered during that time.

00:34And yes, the question of our fellow Filipinos is, how are we going to get up?

00:38This is Arjan Aguirre, a political scientist at Ateneo de Manila University.

00:45Tell us about the atmosphere of Philippine society back then.

00:49How could Magsaysay emerge from that atmosphere?

00:54So it's post-war, we were one of the most destroyed countries in the world,

00:59particularly Manila.

01:01This is, you know, less than 10 years later.

01:04What I want to point out here is that our fellow Filipinos at that time,

01:10let's say, were slowly rising up, but again, the problem with development

01:15is that they are not that felt easily by the people,

01:20especially in a post-World War situation,

01:25wherein a lot of people are constructing bridges, roads, etc.

01:30For a country that is rising up from the war,

01:33music is a way to make a living.

01:36In the 1950s, Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis became famous all over the world,

01:44along with big bands that play jazz and rock and roll.
