DPP Offers Support To Lawmaker Recall Efforts

The ruling Democratic Progressive Party says it will now offer support to civic groups running lawmaker recall campaigns around Taiwan, after reports of interference and difficulties experienced by these groups in collecting signatures.

00:07The Democratic Progressive Party's position on the people's independence is to fully

00:14respect the independence of the people and provide necessary assistance and support.

00:22Supporters of both the ruling DPP and the opposition Kuomintang have initiated campaigns

00:27to recall each other's lawmakers.

00:30DPP Secretary General Lin You-tsang says the DPP will now offer its local branch offices

00:35to help civic groups gather signatures.

00:38He says the DPP will also recruit and train volunteers to protect people who want to sign

00:43petitions and to help publicize the recall campaigns.

00:46When asked if this meant that the DPP was fully mobilizing in support of the recall

00:50movement, he had this to say.

00:53The DPP has always been in favor of assistance and support.

00:59The civic groups are the main focus.

01:02As I said earlier, there are a lot of civic groups that are being harassed and disturbed

01:09by the DPP.

01:10These are all anti-democratic situations.

01:15As of March 13th, recall petitions against 35 KMT-affiliated lawmakers have entered the

01:21second stage.

01:22Over a dozen petitions against DPP lawmakers have yet to pass the first stage and require

01:27further documentation.
