00:00On the day Italy commemorates its COVID victims, survivors of the pandemic feel blessed.

00:06Sergio is among them. Today, he's more thankful than ever to the doctors who saved his life at this hospital in Rome five years ago.

00:30He recalls the moment that changed everything for him.

01:00They were closed, they were frozen. I had become a professional.

01:06It was no longer just the doctor who comforted you, there you had to decide in an instant what to do.

01:13Dr. Magliacani compares the pandemic to a monster. He tells us that the most difficult part was seeing patients in pain.

01:22It was a tragic thing. We saw people die, they asked for help, they couldn't see anyone. It was tragic.

01:37To see people die tragically, like that, alone. That was the worst thing.

01:46But not all have shown gratitude for the work we have done, Dr. Magliacani tells us.

01:52Society and institutions, he says, seem to have forgotten how crucial our role was.
