SA Government proposes to use parkland and agricultural land for new housing

Land protected as environment and food production areas would be opened to new housing developments, under a proposal from the State Government. It wants to change laws to allow 61-thousand new homes to be built in the greater Adelaide region.

00:06I will not abide by a planning regime that doesn't allow working and middle class families

00:13to aspire to the Australian dream.

00:15We shouldn't just be jamming working and middle class families into townhouses or gutter to

00:21gutter housing.

00:22The state government wants to open land at Roseworthy, Two Wells, Murray Bridge, Victor

00:27Harbour and Goulwar to housing.

00:29It's land that's currently legally protected from urban encroachment.

00:33It's not as though we're saying that there shouldn't be a protection of our food bowl.

00:38Of course there should be.

00:39But we also need to build homes and this is affecting less than 1% of our prime agricultural

00:45land.

00:46The government says it's earmarked land for infrastructure such as public transport to

00:50service new suburbs.

00:52But there's concern that won't be enough with the opposition saying land that's already

00:57been released hasn't been built on.

01:00Not one slab has been laid in those four releases.

01:04So what we need to see from this Premier is actually less lip service and more slabs being

01:10laid.

01:11There's 10 people who move into the Playford Council area every day if I can use that as

01:15an example and only 0.7 jobs per person who moves out there.

01:20So there's a lot of work to do.

01:22It's not just about building houses, it's about building communities.

01:26To go with the new housing plan, the government is proposing new parklands.

01:30The northern parklands would cover almost 1,000 hectares near Gawler.

01:35The opposition says it's still waiting to see the details, but it's open to supporting

01:40the government's changes in Parliament.
