00:00
And the 75th anniversary season of Formula 1, it's lights out and away we go!
00:07
And it's Lando Norris tiptoeing away from the start, Max Verstappen getting very keen with the pole sitter.
00:13
Into Turn 1 we go, Norris is ahead of Piastri, Verstappen following on.
00:18
Then comes George Russell, Yuki Tsunoda, Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton,
00:22
who looks like he has Alex Albon for company, trying to go round the outside and Albon stays ahead of Hamilton.
00:28
Into Turn 3 we go, Norris in the lead but he's survived it only just.
00:33
Norris, Verstappen, then comes Piastri and they're out of the race.
00:37
It's Jack Dewan, one of the Australian Grand Prix and another rookie coming to grief in the early stages here.
00:46
Safety car's been deployed, Dewan's okay, that's firstly the best news, but he's out.
00:53
So what's happened here, is it just too much throttle?
00:58
Behind the ass to Martin.
01:00
Oh, that would have shocked him that that happened.
01:05
So it's very similar to Hadjar, basically he's accelerated gently,
01:11
but the torques come on stream and just loosened the rear axle and boom, around it goes.
01:18
Oh, and it's a Williams, Carlos Sainz, last year's race winner, is also in the wall, final corner.
01:24
Turn 14, is that under safety car conditions? It must be, Carlos Sainz has dropped it at Turn 14.
01:32
13, hasn't he? And just maybe giving it a little bit too much throttle.
01:38
Here he is, behind the Alpine of Pierre Gasly.
01:41
Oh dear, you said it, you called it Martin, greasy, slipping.
01:46
It's on the racing line, you see, so what happens is...
01:51
Right, so again, he'll be another driver to go, what?
01:54
Massive torque surge.
01:59
Moving up and we can actually see the race start.
02:02
Look how Oscar Piastri gets a better getaway than Lando Norris, but Max Verstappen behind him,
02:07
he's finding all sorts of grip off the line and Lando quickly having to defend.
02:11
Yeah, as they went into 2nd and 3rd gears, then they clearly were spinning their wheels again at McLaren
02:17
and this is where Max took 2nd place. Oscar was really struggling for traction through Turn 2.
02:22
Max drove clean around the outside of him, bold, but successful.
02:26
Yuki Tsunoda got a little bit swallowed up right there into Turn 3 by Charles Leclerc.
02:32
I think Lewis Hamilton was a bit compromised trying to battle his Ferrari teammate at the start.
02:37
This is how Max Verstappen got away and won a getaway.
02:40
Ticking over almost, wasn't he? He had no revs on at all.
02:43
And Lando saw that one coming and was pretty feisty about it.
02:47
There's a statement from him for this season.
02:49
And this is where the back of the McLaren started sliding and Max took a bit of a gamble there
02:55
because he put a lot of trust in Oscar Piastri and why wouldn't he?
03:01
But anyway, he had to go.
03:03
Charles Leclerc being told as well to cool his front left.
03:08
There goes the start from Piastri.
03:17
It's fascinating to see the accuracy when you see that dry line appearing that these drivers can produce.
03:26
Oh, and that is what happens when you can't produce the accuracy.
03:32
Kimi Antonelli from earlier on in this race.
03:37
So he did what George did in pre-practice and stuck his right rear wheel on the grass.
03:43
And all his good overtaking work undone there.
03:47
There's Oscar Piastri now within just a few car lengths of Max Verstappen.
03:51
But they need to capitalize in races like this as Verstappen there gets on the curve
03:55
and that might give Piastri just a little bit more incentive as well
03:58
because he's got the DRS and he's just a bit, a fraction too far back.
04:03
But Verstappen's gone too deep into the gravel, didn't go down the escape road.
04:08
That made the overtake very easy for Piastri.
04:10
They're anxious faces of the Australian fans.
04:13
They'll turn into cheers at the moment when they see their man is up to second.
04:16
Certainly the first part of the year, two McLarens versus Max Verstappen
04:20
and then when Ferrari get it together, they should join the party.
04:24
All right, let's have a look from Max Verstappen's perspective.
04:27
Under braking, just a fraction too deep.
04:32
And yeah, it was water in the curve.
04:34
Looked like gravel he was throwing up but sploshing through the puddles
04:37
and it was just a lock-up front left, wasn't it?
04:40
He's got a liquid line on. A leakage of what?
04:43
I have the seat full of water. Like, full of water.
04:48
Must be the water.
04:50
Let's have that to the Welser filter.
04:53
I think that wing change that they put on his car in Parc Fermacroft.
04:57
Oh, Ted, Fernando Alonso, spinning round and hitting the wall.
05:03
You can see him there, coming to grief, Fernando Alonso, just out of Turn 7.
05:08
And that's going to be at least a safety car.
05:12
Will they clear that up?
05:13
So, will they put slicks on? That's a tough, tough decision now.
05:17
It's going to take a while for them all to join together,
05:20
but it's going to take a while to clear the debris.
05:23
So, through Turn 5 and 6, and he got on the kerb, and that was the end of that for them.
05:32
He didn't hit the wall as hard as I thought he might, and crashed it going off there.
05:36
So, yeah, he would have been surprised by that as well, you know,
05:41
because he wasn't off the track.
05:43
It just, it just, just touched the gravel, didn't it?
05:47
Just loosened the car off.
05:49
And in front, nearly two seconds, the gap between Norris and Piastri.
05:53
Here goes Scholl to clear down the inside.
05:55
Sonoda's seen that, coming a mile off, and going out to the gravel.
05:59
And Nando Norris stays in the lead.
06:01
Oskar Piastri comes back on in second, and slides off into the grass.
06:05
Verstappen takes second place.
06:07
And Oskar Piastri, spinning his rear wheels, could be out of his home Grand Prix.
06:12
Yeah, Bortoletto's gone into the barriers, as has Liam Lawson.
06:15
Lawson at Turn 2, Bortoletto at Turn 13.
06:20
And they have both come to a standstill.
06:25
Nando Norris back in the lead of this race.
06:27
He's got past Lewis Hamilton on the intermediate tyres.
06:31
He's now right behind his teammate.
06:34
He's now right behind his teammate, Oskar Piastri, who, of course, has been lapped.
06:37
They're going to go to the back of a pack, aren't they, when they pit,
06:41
because others have already got the inters on.
06:44
Do they need to pit? Behind the safety car, do they need to pit?
06:47
This is where they suddenly came across three corners from home,
06:51
and they both went off the road.
06:53
Lando hoovered it up.
06:55
Oskar had gone further off the road, and that's what put him in that position.
07:00
And this is the bit where he tried to go forward initially.
07:04
Yeah, so they both hit the rain shower at the same time.
07:08
He's up to sixth, Hülkenberg up to seventh.
07:12
Here's his teammate, Gabriel Bortoletto.
07:14
That's how he lost it.
07:16
Yeah, it's the same, it's sort of the rookie spin, isn't it?
07:19
It's light the back up, you get a torque, you get some torque, and it anti-locks.
07:26
That actually, hang on a minute.
07:28
Did that right rear come loose?
07:29
Did that break? Yeah.
07:31
Did that break and send him off?
07:34
Has he had a...
07:36
You'd have to say that actually,
07:40
that is exactly what happened to Hadjar, isn't it?
07:42
It is. Before the start.
07:45
Exactly what happened to him.
07:46
I'll tell you what, he very nearly collected Nico Hülkenberg there as well.
07:51
Did Liam Lawson.
07:52
We've lost Doohan, we lost Hadjar, we lost Bortoletto, and we've lost Lawson.
07:58
Lando Norris now sees the crowd standing for him.
08:03
The Australian Grand Prix is going to be win number one in 2025.
08:08
For Lando Norris, he picks up where he left off in Abu Dhabi.
08:12
Norris wins, Verstappen second.
08:15
What a thrilling race.
08:16
George Russell comes home to finish on the podium ahead of his teammate, Kimi Antonelli.
08:23
Antonelli gets a five-second penalty and will be classified behind Alex Albon.
08:29
And what a... so much pressure.
08:32
He won. Great job.
08:34
Oof. A little bit of pressure.
08:38
What a voice. Beautifully handled.
08:42
Executed to the second one second later and we were done.
08:47
So well done, everyone. Congrats. Amazing way to start the year.
08:49
Thank you so much.
