00:00And the 75th anniversary season of Formula 1, it's lights out and away we go!

00:07And it's Lando Norris tiptoeing away from the start, Max Verstappen getting very keen with the pole sitter.

00:13Into Turn 1 we go, Norris is ahead of Piastri, Verstappen following on.

00:18Then comes George Russell, Yuki Tsunoda, Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton,

00:22who looks like he has Alex Albon for company, trying to go round the outside and Albon stays ahead of Hamilton.

00:28Into Turn 3 we go, Norris in the lead but he's survived it only just.

00:33Norris, Verstappen, then comes Piastri and they're out of the race.

00:37It's Jack Dewan, one of the Australian Grand Prix and another rookie coming to grief in the early stages here.

00:46Safety car's been deployed, Dewan's okay, that's firstly the best news, but he's out.

00:53So what's happened here, is it just too much throttle?

00:58Behind the ass to Martin.

01:00Oh, that would have shocked him that that happened.

01:05So it's very similar to Hadjar, basically he's accelerated gently,

01:11but the torques come on stream and just loosened the rear axle and boom, around it goes.

01:18Oh, and it's a Williams, Carlos Sainz, last year's race winner, is also in the wall, final corner.

01:24Turn 14, is that under safety car conditions? It must be, Carlos Sainz has dropped it at Turn 14.

01:3213, hasn't he? And just maybe giving it a little bit too much throttle.

01:38Here he is, behind the Alpine of Pierre Gasly.

01:41Oh dear, you said it, you called it Martin, greasy, slipping.

01:46It's on the racing line, you see, so what happens is...

01:51Right, so again, he'll be another driver to go, what?

01:54Massive torque surge.

01:59Moving up and we can actually see the race start.

02:02Look how Oscar Piastri gets a better getaway than Lando Norris, but Max Verstappen behind him,

02:07he's finding all sorts of grip off the line and Lando quickly having to defend.

02:11Yeah, as they went into 2nd and 3rd gears, then they clearly were spinning their wheels again at McLaren

02:17and this is where Max took 2nd place. Oscar was really struggling for traction through Turn 2.

02:22Max drove clean around the outside of him, bold, but successful.

02:26Yuki Tsunoda got a little bit swallowed up right there into Turn 3 by Charles Leclerc.

02:32I think Lewis Hamilton was a bit compromised trying to battle his Ferrari teammate at the start.

02:37This is how Max Verstappen got away and won a getaway.

02:40Ticking over almost, wasn't he? He had no revs on at all.

02:43And Lando saw that one coming and was pretty feisty about it.

02:47There's a statement from him for this season.

02:49And this is where the back of the McLaren started sliding and Max took a bit of a gamble there

02:55because he put a lot of trust in Oscar Piastri and why wouldn't he?

03:01But anyway, he had to go.

03:03Charles Leclerc being told as well to cool his front left.

03:08There goes the start from Piastri.

03:17It's fascinating to see the accuracy when you see that dry line appearing that these drivers can produce.

03:26Oh, and that is what happens when you can't produce the accuracy.

03:32Kimi Antonelli from earlier on in this race.

03:37So he did what George did in pre-practice and stuck his right rear wheel on the grass.

03:43And all his good overtaking work undone there.

03:47There's Oscar Piastri now within just a few car lengths of Max Verstappen.

03:51But they need to capitalize in races like this as Verstappen there gets on the curve

03:55and that might give Piastri just a little bit more incentive as well

03:58because he's got the DRS and he's just a bit, a fraction too far back.

04:03But Verstappen's gone too deep into the gravel, didn't go down the escape road.

04:08That made the overtake very easy for Piastri.

04:10They're anxious faces of the Australian fans.

04:13They'll turn into cheers at the moment when they see their man is up to second.

04:16Certainly the first part of the year, two McLarens versus Max Verstappen

04:20and then when Ferrari get it together, they should join the party.

04:24All right, let's have a look from Max Verstappen's perspective.

04:27Under braking, just a fraction too deep.

04:32And yeah, it was water in the curve.

04:34Looked like gravel he was throwing up but sploshing through the puddles

04:37and it was just a lock-up front left, wasn't it?

04:40He's got a liquid line on. A leakage of what?

04:43I have the seat full of water. Like, full of water.

04:50Let's have that to the Welser filter.

04:53I think that wing change that they put on his car in Parc Fermacroft.

04:57Oh, Ted, Fernando Alonso, spinning round and hitting the wall.

05:03You can see him there, coming to grief, Fernando Alonso, just out of Turn 7.

05:08And that's going to be at least a safety car.

05:12Will they clear that up?

05:13So, will they put slicks on? That's a tough, tough decision now.

05:17It's going to take a while for them all to join together,

05:20but it's going to take a while to clear the debris.

05:23So, through Turn 5 and 6, and he got on the kerb, and that was the end of that for them.

05:32He didn't hit the wall as hard as I thought he might, and crashed it going off there.

05:36So, yeah, he would have been surprised by that as well, you know,

05:41because he wasn't off the track.

05:43It just, it just, just touched the gravel, didn't it?

05:47Just loosened the car off.

05:49And in front, nearly two seconds, the gap between Norris and Piastri.

05:53Here goes Scholl to clear down the inside.

05:55Sonoda's seen that, coming a mile off, and going out to the gravel.

05:59And Nando Norris stays in the lead.

06:01Oskar Piastri comes back on in second, and slides off into the grass.

06:05Verstappen takes second place.

06:07And Oskar Piastri, spinning his rear wheels, could be out of his home Grand Prix.

06:12Yeah, Bortoletto's gone into the barriers, as has Liam Lawson.

06:15Lawson at Turn 2, Bortoletto at Turn 13.

06:20And they have both come to a standstill.

06:25Nando Norris back in the lead of this race.

06:27He's got past Lewis Hamilton on the intermediate tyres.

06:31He's now right behind his teammate.

06:34He's now right behind his teammate, Oskar Piastri, who, of course, has been lapped.

06:37They're going to go to the back of a pack, aren't they, when they pit,

06:41because others have already got the inters on.

06:44Do they need to pit? Behind the safety car, do they need to pit?

06:47This is where they suddenly came across three corners from home,

06:51and they both went off the road.

06:53Lando hoovered it up.

06:55Oskar had gone further off the road, and that's what put him in that position.

07:00And this is the bit where he tried to go forward initially.

07:04Yeah, so they both hit the rain shower at the same time.

07:08He's up to sixth, Hülkenberg up to seventh.

08:03The Australian Grand Prix is going to be win number one in 2025.

08:16George Russell comes home to finish on the podium ahead of his teammate, Kimi Antonelli.

08:23Antonelli gets a five-second penalty and will be classified behind Alex Albon.
