Alarms raised to take extra care on NT roads after crash killing a 25-year-old

Northern Territory police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a young man in a car which rolled over near Berry Springs, south of Darwin. Two people survived the crash and has prompted more calls for drivers to take extra care on territory roads.

00:00A nightmarish scene, with two men found trapped inside an overturned Toyota Hilux.

00:09A 19-year-old man survived, but a 25-year-old male passenger had died.

00:15St John's attended, police rendered aid, however unfortunately one of the persons in

00:21the vehicle passed away on the scene.

00:24About 5.30 this morning, emergency services received reports of a single vehicle rollover

00:30on Cox Peninsula Road, about 35 kilometres south of the Stuart Highway.

00:36Police say the vehicle was carrying three people, including a 20-year-old woman who

00:41made her own way to Palmerston before police arrived.

00:45Initial indications would show us that speed, alcohol and attention are definitely factors

00:52in this crash.

00:54The ABC understands the two crash survivors were taken here to Royal Darwin Hospital.

00:59Police say the 19-year-old man who was pulled from the wreckage suffered a head injury,

01:04while the condition of the 20-year-old woman who left the scene remains unknown.

01:10The tragedy marks the sixth road fatality this year, after a 42-year-old female pedestrian

01:16was struck and killed in Berrima on Wednesday night.

01:20Police say the driver immediately stopped and tested negative for drugs and alcohol.

01:25After last year's horror death toll of 60 lives lost, the NT's peak road safety body

01:31has been calling for infrastructure upgrades.

01:3470% of our roads are unsealed, we don't have the safety barriers and we don't have

01:41the signage to the same extent that we see in other parts of the country.

01:47They're also concerned people just aren't taking the issue seriously.

01:52The community is becoming a little bit blasé around road safety messaging.

01:57A plea to prevent heartache for loved ones left behind.
