00:04Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're looking at potato chip flavors and brands that were discontinued.

00:09Since we're emphasizing the potato in potato chips,

00:12we're excluding corn-based products like Doritos and Cheetos.

00:16New Crunch Taters, my name is Keith.

00:20When that crunch explodes, knock me off my feet.

00:24Number 10. Jalapeno Pringles.

00:27Some snack on chips, but for those who need a treat with more of a kick,

00:30there's always that jar of jalapenos in the fridge. Who says you can't have both?

00:34Hey, you guys want to stack different Pringles flavors to create new flavor combos? Here,

00:37I'll go first. Pizza, barbecue, and jalapeno. The spicy barbecue pizza stack.

00:42For a period, you could. Hitting store shelves in 2005,

00:46jalapeno-flavored Pringles were introduced as a limited-time product.

00:49Much like the zesty taste they left in your mouth, though, they stuck around.

00:53They remind me of Miss Vicky's jalapeno for sure.

00:57But of course, theirs are kettle-cooked, and these are Pringles.

01:01That's actually a great little flavor. I'm actually digging these quite a lot.

01:05The fan-favorite flavor was available for more than a decade and a half.

01:09Around 2022, consumers noticed jalapeno Pringles had become scarce.

01:13Pringles confirmed in 2023 that they had discontinued the flavor,

01:18sending grieving fans to purchase whatever remaining cans they could find on online

01:22retailers. This decision left patrons red in the face, needing a jalapeno to quench their

01:27frustration. When people think of discontinued chips that pack a pizza punch,

01:51Keebler's pizzerias often come to mind. Alas, those didn't contain potatoes,

02:04although Lay's Deep-Dish Pizza Chips are another story. Part of Lay's Taste of America line,

02:10the Deep-Dish Pizza Chips stood out from the pack. Drawing inspiration from the historic chain

02:20Giordano's, it might not have been as thick as a Deep-Dish Pizza, but every chip contained the

02:25taste of Chicago. Initially available from 2018 to 2019, the Deep-Dish Pizza flavor came back in

02:312022, albeit without Giordano's branding. Once again, this would be a limited-time offer. Maybe

02:38Lay's will bring the flavor back for another encore. For now, they're gone with the Windy City.

02:438. O'Boysies

02:47While best known for their cookies, there was a time when Keebler Company tried tapping into

02:51other snack food demographics, the potato chip crowd included. Among their sorely missed products

03:02are O'Boysies, which hit the scene in the late 80s with original and sour cream and onion flavors.

03:06There were many words to describe these potato chips. Bubbling, crackly, and as they repeatedly

03:12put in the advertising, o'boisterous. That phrase never really caught on. Although,

03:20O'Boysies kept consumers coming back well into the 90s. The writing was on the wall in December

03:251995 when Keebler closed its Haltom City factory where salted chips were made. O'Boysies quietly

03:31disappeared not long after. But if they ever return, the snack aisle is bound to become boisterous.

03:377. Lay's Wavy Milk Chocolate Covered Potato Chips

03:42In the mood for something salty and sweet,

03:45Lay's offered the ideal combo with their wavy milk chocolate covered flavor.

03:49But what's that? You say you're more of a dark chocolate person? Well, good news! Lay's also

04:09produced a dark chocolate flavor, as well as a milk chocolate with almond pieces for those who

04:14want a little something extra. Now for the bad news. When the chocolate-dipped chip arrived in

04:252013, Lay's stressed that this wouldn't be a mainstay. VP of Marketing Ram Krishnan said

04:31that could change if the chocolate chips proved popular enough. They apparently weren't,

04:36since you can't purchase them anywhere now. However, if you have some chocolate and original

04:47Lay's chips, they're easy enough to make at home.

04:496. O'Grady's

04:51Debuting in 1984, O'Grady's was all about giving people more. Well,

04:56maybe not more flavors, as there were initially only two. Original and au gratin.

05:06When it came to the latter, few potato chips on the market were cheesier. O'Grady's upped its

05:13game with flavors like Hearty Seasonings and The Works. These chips were also considerably

05:18bigger than what consumers were used to, meaning patrons would put their money toward a hefty

05:23mouthful. Speaking of money, Frito-Lay reportedly invested $25 million in advertising.

05:36Championing the slogan, the more potato, potato chip. Despite the larger-than-life

05:40marketing and taste, O'Grady's got crushed in the 90s. We suppose Ruffles provided a

05:47close alternative, but even years later, O'Grady's leaves us craving more.

05:525. Crunch Taters

05:53Home Alone takes us back to a bygone era when VHS tapes dominated the format war,

05:58the Pepsi can possessed a more appealing design, and Crunch Taters were the snack

06:02choice of children everywhere. In addition to receiving an endorsement from Kevin McAllister,

06:10these kettle-styled potato chips were distinguished with a cowboy alligator on the bag.

06:15After spending years in snack food limbo, Lays revived Crunch Taters in 2022 and 2024

06:21with three flavors — Original, Barbecue Mighty Mesquite, and Hoppin' Jalapeno.

06:32Just as Christmas comes and goes, Crunch Taters sadly weren't back for good.

06:38If you look in the right places online, you still might be able to wrangle up a bag.

06:42For the rest of us, Crunch Taters exclusively exist somewhere in our memories.

06:594. Tato Wilds

07:0180s kids may fondly remember Keebler Tato Skins, but for those growing up in the mid-90s,

07:06the mere mention of Tato Wilds will trigger memories among your taste buds.

07:17In addition to flavors like cheese and bacon and sour cream and onion,

07:20these chips came in two different shapes — Traditional Tato Skin and Criss Cross.

07:24Their time in the limelight was bound to be short-lived, as Tato Wilds were introduced in

07:281995, around the same time Keebler started distancing itself from salty snacks.

07:36Tato Wilds would go defunct by 1997, although if you can somehow track down a bag,

07:41it'll be like opening a time capsule. On that note, the commercials were peak 90s,

07:46when everything sold to us on TV looked wild.

07:503. Daddy Crisp Chips

07:52The 80s and 90s crowd probably won't even recognize Daddy Crisp Chips.

07:57For those who lived through the 70s, these potato chips were a source of comfort food.

08:04Ray Francis founded the Daddy Crisp Company based in Atlanta. Potato chips became a

08:08hot-ticket item for the company, with flavors like Ripple, sour cream and onion,

08:12and barbecue taking a bite out of the market. The brand has since faded into obscurity,

08:17although Daddy Crisp Chips have garnered more attention in recent years.

08:27Although, this is primarily due to an old commercial with the tagline,

08:32Love Your Daddy. While we would love to see these chips make a comeback,

08:36the marketing department would definitely need a new slogan.

08:44100% natural, 100% crisp will do.

08:472. Lay's Southern Biscuits & Gravy

08:50They say that potato chips are a snack, not a meal. In the case of Lay's Southern Biscuits

08:54& Gravy, we must disagree. In 2015, millions voted in Lay's Do Us A Flavor contest.

09:03The finalists included West Coast Truffle Fries, New York Reuben and Greek Town Hero,

09:08yet Southern Biscuits & Gravy emerged victorious. Haley Green, who submitted the flavor idea,

09:13won $1 million. Consumers were the true winners,

09:24chowing down on soul food in chip form. The buttermilk taste will make anyone nostalgic

09:28for a home-cooked meal. While we're on the subject of nostalgia, the chips were discontinued around

09:332018 followed by an all-too-brief return in 2024. Do us a favor, Lay's, and bring this flavor back

10:08Famous for its nuts and monocled mascot, Planter's has branched out with several

10:12products we'd like to see back on store shelves. PB Crisps, anyone?

10:24Since we're celebrating potato chips, though, let's revisit an old favorite.

10:28Planter's Potato Chips are about as classic as you can get. The snack giant aimed to compete

10:32with Pringles, with similarly stackable chips in a tennis ball-like can. The commercials at the

10:40time even received testimonials from people claiming they preferred the taste of Planter's.

10:44Whether or not those endorsements were legit, it's safe to say Pringles came out on top.

10:48Since we love a snack smackdown, maybe it's time for Planter's to bring back their potato chips.
