Former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon steps back from Politics  Nicola Sturgeon chats with the media outside Dynamic Earth.  After she has taken the decision to step back from politics  Nicola Sturgeon has said she believes society will look back and "feel a sense of collective shame" at the vilification of trans people.  The former first minister was asked about the acrimonious debate over sex and gender as she announced her decision to stand down from Scottish politics at the Holyrood election next year.

00:00Given everything that's happened in Dundee and other universities, is it time for your

00:05successor to revisit that policy?

00:07No, I think there is a big, big challenge in our university sector right now. It's not

00:12just in Scotland, we're seeing this across the UK. There's no easy solution and I think,

00:18and I know the government is thinking carefully about that, but no I don't believe it's time

00:22to take away free education. I won't speak for anybody else, I'm not going to try to

00:27speak for my successors in government, but for me, I'm standing here right now as somebody

00:34about to leave parliament after 30 years, having been the first female First Minister.

00:38If there had been tuition fees when I was 16, 17, 18, I wouldn't have gone to university.

00:43I don't think people like me have got a right to pull that ladder up behind us, so I will

00:46always stand firm for free education. It's for those in government now to make those

00:51decisions for the future, but I know where I stand.
