As the late Pete Seeger reminded us, music does not respect borders and the story of folk music is the story of migration – the songs moving back and forth with the people, evolving on the way. Inspired in part by Seeger's classic live music show 'Rainbow Quest', host and folk singer Clarke Camilleri invites hand- picked guests to take the stage and perform music from a diverse range of traditions, and to discuss their music's vital place in today's world.
In this episode (filmed before the Covid pandemic) CLARKE MEETS performers from several traditions in North America. We enjoy the magical harmonies of mother and daughter Sandy Newlin and Elizabeth LaPrelle as they sing together and speak candidly to Clarke about the musical traditions of their home, deep in the Appalachian mountains of Virginia, USA. British harmonica player Ed Hopwood provides virtuoso interpretations of American folk tunes across Cajun, Blues and Old Time music, and demonstrates an array of performance techniques used to extract full value from this most soulful of instruments. Canadian performer Alissa Skorik plays her collection of handmade Native American flutes and speaks powerfully about what 'tradition' means in urban, 21st Century Canada.
