Byron Bay still experiencing high winds with warnings still in place

Some of the fiercest winds have been recorded at Byron Bay where they were clocked over 100km an hour. While the threat from the wind is easing today the region remind on high alert as flood waters continue to threaten a number of towns.

00:07kilometres an hour, strong enough to bring down those Norfolk Pines, tourists are largely

00:12heeding warnings to stay away.

00:14Those winds have dropped from the worst levels that were recorded at 90 to 100 kilometres

00:19an hour just up on Cape Byron over there.

00:22They're down to about 50 to 60 kilometres an hour, but there's still an extreme weather

00:26warning and lots of people are still staying inside.

00:30Byron Bay isn't out of the woods yet.

00:31The real risk remains floodings.

00:33There's warnings for communities spread over hundreds of kilometres here, and the next

00:38few hours are going to be crucial in seeing how they fare.

00:41That wait on people has been really tough.

00:43They've already had a full week.

00:45I've never seen a cyclone hang around like Tropical Cyclone Alfred did, so people have

00:49been on tenterhooks for a long time.
