A hockey legacy rekindled 50 years later

It has been 50 years since what was surely one of Malaysia’s greatest sporting moments – when the men’s national hockey squad of 1975 stunned the world's best to finish in the fourth place in the home World Cup in March 1975.   The players of that team will get a chance to rekindle those memories in a 50th anniversary celebration event on May 18. 00:29Our first match was against New Zealand. We had a penalty stroke. We failed. The match

00:33ended in a 0-0 draw. The second game was Spain. We drew again 0-0. Don't forget the Spanish

00:41goal was one of the top goalkeepers in the world. Then the third game was against Poland

00:46and we went on to win 3-1. Then we played Pakistan. We would watch the match. We gave

00:53Pakistan a run for money. It was a very, very close match. Finally, the last few minutes

00:58they scored and they won 2-1. Then the next match was a do-or-die mission against Holland.

01:05Poon Fook Look scored the first goal. Then the Dutch equalised, tied Scrooge. Then the

01:13game was ding-dong both sides, you know. And not forgetting with the crowd, the type of

01:18massive crowd, with, you know, a killer crowd surrounding like that. The last two minutes

01:22of the game, we got a shot on. So I decided now to go and take the shot on. Franck

01:28Coe pushed, stopped by Wong Chun Hin perfectly, and a straight drive made it 2-1.

01:36You see my stick like that. The whole stick was blood after that. So when they put the

01:58plaster down and they're hanging, you know. With that I played. Now I know we are all

02:03made of mincemeat. We cannot take our skin off mince. So, you know, you've seen Surjit

02:09eating, like a big slice. There are that type of spectators, 50,000 spectators there. Once

02:18you have decided to play for the country, your mindset should be the country and the

02:25game. No more family, no more what happened to whom. You're playing for the country.

02:30Then the population is waiting for the results. India were deserving winners, but no less

02:39we just really gave them a Randa. I'm happy that you all are still recognising us. I think

02:49the people of Malaysia deserve this love. The spectators who came, you know, in the

02:53rain, you know, everywhere they were. We must get the hockey back to where we were.
