00:00I think I knew I wanted to be an actor since I was really little, but I was like, that's

00:07a ridiculous job. Like who becomes an actor? My parents were musical theater actors, and

00:13so I just grew up as a tour baby, always around actors. I come from a family where lawyer,

00:22doctor, accountant, pharmacist, actor, what's this? I was pre-med in college and I took

00:28the MCAT. I got a really good score. I auditioned for the show and I was like, if I don't do

00:33this show, I'm going to die, because I felt so connected to the script. I don't want to

00:37go into psychiatry. I want to be here. Go save some lives. I love that The Pit has so

00:43many different kinds of people, so many different perspectives. Having a story where each person

00:50can look at the screen and go, oh, I see myself. You're from Nepal. Nepali. It makes it more

00:57authentic when different types of viewpoints are expressed. When Shabana, me, and Sasha,

01:05who is a patient who comes in, who's also South Asian, we're in a room and it's three

01:09brown women and we're all talking to each other and we're not related. And we're not

01:13talking about the fact that we're South Asian. We're just like there. That was like my favorite

01:16moment on set. And I kept wanting to cry. And I was like, I'm not supposed to be crying.

01:20My dad is Filipino, and I'm really proud to be a part of a medical show where we are

01:26showcasing Filipino people.

01:32They speak Tagalog in the show. My friends and family are going to watch this and feel

01:37seen, and that makes me so proud to be a part of.

01:41I think the creators of the show really have something to say right now about the state

01:46of healthcare. Symptoms show up differently on different people. Heart attack symptoms

01:50are different for women than they are for men. You know, skin conditions look different

01:52on darker skin than lighter skin. And we consistently have like worse health outcomes.

02:03There's something so powerful about showing how someone with sickle cell might be mistreated

02:08and racialized and not given proper treatment. Little empathy goes a long way without suffering

02:14in real pain.

02:15I hope The Pit will encourage and invite those kinds of conversations.

02:22My advice to young multicultural talent coming in is to just keep going. I would say do it.

02:28You matter. Your advice, your opinion, the things you care about, the things you think

02:33about, you really matter.

02:36I really hope to see more diversity writing the stories, telling the stories, not just

02:41in front of the camera.

02:44If I had quit like two years ago, I wouldn't have gotten this amazing opportunity. I think

02:49like really believe in yourself and like trust that if you keep going and you keep working

02:53on your craft, it'll come. You just need to keep going.
