February is almost over and March is the month of women's month.
00:06
This morning, we will talk about the women who are fighting in the battlefield of the Philippine Armed Forces.
00:13
You're right, Audrey.
00:14
And because of our guests, we will have a fight and a protest.
00:18
Let's meet Lieutenant Colonel Leilani Casa and Lieutenant Colonel Dolly Dequiros Castillo.
00:24
Welcome to Rise and Shine Philippines. Happy Women's Month.
00:27
Good morning.
00:28
Good morning to both of you.
00:31
Actually, Advanced Happy Women's Month.
00:34
Well, a bit of background for those who started earlier.
00:38
What pushed you to choose to be a soldier?
00:42
You're the women.
00:44
Well, let's correct first the assumption.
00:48
We're not regular.
00:50
We are part of the reserve force of the AFP.
00:55
So, it takes a while that some people may not know us in the regular force.
01:02
But, where did we start?
01:05
For example, in my situation, I was in the executive office of the government.
01:13
And during that time, when I started in the government,
01:18
one of the areas that I didn't master or expertise in was the military dimension.
01:25
You know, if you're passionate about your job in the government,
01:31
you have a lot of areas that you need to understand.
01:35
And you have a handle on programs, projects, and activities.
01:42
And in my job when I was younger, one of the things that I didn't know was the military dimension.
01:51
But, even before then, the question of where I started,
01:58
maybe what I can say is that it started with my passion and commitment to serve.
02:07
To serve the country.
02:09
So, even when I was in the civilian government,
02:14
I saw the importance that all things that influence an effective governance should be seen.
02:28
So, one of which is the military dimension.
02:31
So, when I had the chance to understand what it is, how can I get in there.
02:38
So, I studied in the National Defense College of the Philippines,
02:48
where they give money to those who are interested in having a deeper understanding of the military dimension,
02:58
or the military or security and defense sector.
03:02
Okay.
03:03
So, that's how I started.
03:05
All right. You go ahead, ma'am.
03:06
Yes, ma'am. Good morning, sir. Good morning, ma'am.
03:08
I joined the active reserve force in the army because I really feel that I need to give my duty and responsibility
03:19
to help national security and support my fellow countrymen.
03:25
All right.
03:26
Which is, the manifestations of all their stories,
03:30
it's not about that you need to be a woman because you can't be a soldier.
03:34
We're done doing the stereotyping and it's time that girls are one of the ones fighting for our country.
03:41
Well, we want to know, of course, the challenges or struggles that you went through as a soldier.
03:48
Well, sir, on my end, it's not that different.
03:55
Okay.
03:57
It's just the same if you're in a different field, right?
04:01
Okay.
04:02
In the government, for example, when you work on social development.
04:05
Okay.
04:06
It's the same with the military and defense.
04:09
The only thing that we need to understand is that, of course,
04:14
the military and defense have their own culture and structure that we need to understand.
04:24
Okay.
04:25
In terms of if there are challenges that are different,
04:28
like you'll lose your will or you'll be discouraged,
04:33
I didn't feel that when I joined the Armed Forces.
04:41
You really have a passion.
04:42
How about you, ma'am?
04:43
For me, it's really challenging because being in the corporate world,
04:48
actually, I'm the Senior Vice President of Air Materiel Wing Savings Loan Association.
04:53
This is a non-stock savings loan that caters to the financial needs of the military and the police.
04:58
So, from the corporate world, shifting to the military every weekend or every day if we're needed,
05:05
time management is really what I focus on.
05:11
Well, Colonel mentioned earlier that it's a military dimension, right?
05:15
So that you can better understand this field.
05:17
Yes.
05:18
That's why you joined.
05:19
Anyway, did you experience discrimination during your time?
05:24
Considering this is a male-dominated institution.
05:26
Yes.
05:27
You know, discrimination becomes evident if you yourself have a problem, right?
05:36
For example, me.
05:37
If my sense of entitlement or my expectation of everything is that I should be known as a woman,
05:48
that I'm a woman, that this is what I should do, that I have expectations,
05:53
when I entered the area of defense and security, I didn't see any discrimination.
06:03
Even among the police now,
06:07
the Armed Forces of the Philippines continues to calibrate
06:16
all these policies, mechanisms, and guidelines that they bring down
06:20
so that we can avoid discrimination and elevate women.
06:35
And as you can see, even in the PMA, they are tapping the hip of officers.
06:43
Here in our AFP, at least about 800 or so women officials are working.
06:54
There are about more than 4,000 enlisted women, uniformed women who are inside.
07:04
I was part of the Women's Movement.
07:09
When we were working on the Women in Development and Nation Building,
07:15
it opened a lot of doors for women to be part of the security and defense sector
07:23
because it opened up for admission,
07:26
or in joining all women who are interested to join.
07:31
And we saw that because of that, around 1992, 30 years ago,
07:38
the women's participation in the uniformed service became strong.
07:46
So you can see now that there are commanders, they are heading commands inside the AFP.
07:55
It's a big thing to pay attention to gender equality and women empowerment.
08:01
And thanks to you, ma'am, who is one of the pioneers of this.
08:05
But on your side, ma'am, how is it?
08:08
So far, sir, those are the days that there are biases like that.
08:13
Actually, on my part in the Army Reserve Force,
08:16
especially when it involves women, especially in training.
08:19
So I didn't see or feel that women were discriminated against
08:24
because we were actually prioritized, especially when we were in the field.
08:29
We were given importance.
08:31
Because they were the ones who should have joined.
08:33
Yes, they should have joined.
08:35
It's just your own opinion.
08:37
We know that women are different and strong.
08:40
Greetings to you and your strength.
08:42
I hope that the level of women, especially in male-dominated institutions,
08:48
will continue to rise.
08:50
I hope they will be an inspiration
08:52
to the women who joined the military reserve.
08:56
Because if they can do it, you can do it too.
08:59
Again, thank you very much for your visit to Rising Shine Philippines.
09:03
Colonel.
09:04
Happy Women's Day.
09:05
Happy Women's Day.
09:06
Happy Women's Month.
09:07
You are all invited to our activities that will be held in March.
09:13
I'm also part of SONTA International.
09:16
And we have an event on March 21.
09:20
And we will actually be inside the AFP.
09:24
Because my female colleagues are another side of my life.
09:28
I let them enter Camp Aguinaldo so that they can also be exposed.
09:32
So my female colleagues will be with us inside Camp Aguinaldo on March 21
09:39
for the celebration of the International Women's Day
09:42
and of course the National Women's Month in the Philippines.
09:46
Thank you so much.
09:47
We look forward to the success of that event.
09:49
Thank you very much.
