MCA President Datuk Shri Dr Wee Kha Siong said, reinstating local council elections
00:07
in Kuala Lumpur will ensure better governance and accountability. He said elected councillors
00:13
and representatives will be held accountable and serve the residents better, as there are
00:18
currently no state assemblymen in the Malaysian capital.
00:23
Elections like this will make Kuala Lumpur's services more accessible.
00:30
It's as if other places have state assemblies.
00:35
The local council elections can be used to replace the absence of state government.
00:44
However, the local council elections will be held under the auspices of the EBKR.
00:53
I hope the government will agree to this.
00:56
The people who pushed for this are in power today.
01:03
Dr Wee said this after attending a Chinese New Year open house at Petaling Street on Sunday.
01:09
Malaysia's first local elections were held in Georgetown in 1951, followed by Kuala Lumpur
01:16
in 1952. Dr Wee also highlighted the cultural and historical significance of Petaling Street,
01:23
also known as Chinatown. He said MCA will continue to help preserve the identity of
01:29
Petaling Street, which was once the site of a tapioca flour factory in the late 19th century
01:35
and once an important commercial hub of the capital.
01:38
I still think that the multilingual society in Malaysia is a sin.
01:45
I don't think it's a problem.
01:48
That's why I said we should defend it.
01:50
If you have a brand, it's just a matter of size.
01:54
I see that their brand is the largest in the country, so it's no problem.
01:59
This was originally a Chinese street.
02:01
When it was first opened, this was the busiest street.
02:06
So there's nothing we can't let go of.
02:10
They have the spirit of opening a shop, and the spirit of preserving the identity of Petaling Street.
02:13
Whether it's a Chinese street or not, we just need to take it down and change it back to Petaling Street.
02:17
So we haven't given up yet.
02:19
But when I got the information, I said,
02:21
hurry up and stop it.
02:22
Let's change the past and let everyone know.
02:25
Then let's oppose it together.
02:27
Don't wait until next year's New Year's Eve to come to Petaling Street, and then it will be gone.
02:31
The Chinese New Year event was jointly hosted by Federal Territory MCA
02:36
and the Kuala Lumpur Hawkers and Petty Traders Association
02:40
to usher in the Year of the Snake, together with visitors and tourists.
