00:00The Vatican says Pope Francis was in critical condition on Saturday after he suffered a

00:07prolonged asthmatic respiratory crisis.

00:11It's the first time the word critical was used by the Vatican to describe the Pope's

00:15condition since his hospitalization.

00:19Francis required the administration of high flows of oxygen, in addition to blood transfusions,

00:24after his blood tests revealed that he had a condition associated with anemia.

00:30Doctors treating the Pope warned that his condition may deteriorate further, adding

00:34that he could potentially develop sepsis, a serious infection of the blood that can

00:39lead to organ failure or death.

00:43Francis was rushed to hospital on the 14th of February after a week-long bout with bronchitis

00:48worsened.

00:49The pontiff has chronic lung disease and is prone to bronchitis during the winter season.
