00:00As you know I'm not commissioner for migration, it's Michal Bruner, but since I'm in charge
00:12of Mediterranean it's very horizontal and it's also about migration.
00:16So yes, I visited your Prime Minister a month ago, Meloni, and I talked to her about this.
00:25Italy has a special case and this is something we call innovative model, we are trying to
00:32see whether this can work with third countries, but next month European Commission will have
00:39a new document, new regulation on so-called return directive, so we will see what this
00:46will entail.
00:47At this moment I cannot say more, we are trying to find the best way how to treat illegal
00:53migration, but when we talk about legal migration we are creating legal pathways, which means
00:59that we are creating talent partnerships with countries of the region, with Morocco, with
01:05Tunisia, with Egypt, trying to find how to connect people to people, and this is what
01:10we are doing when we talk about legal pathways.
01:13On illegal it's a little bit difficult, but we are trying our best in order to help our
01:19countries in the southern neighbourhood, to help them with new instruments, with devices,
01:25with radar systems, with frontex and also with some payments in order to manage their
01:33migrants from sub-Saharan Africa and from different countries.
01:36This is something which is complex as you know, but it is the case and we have to deal
01:42with it.
01:43There won't be peace without peace and security in the Middle East, and we want to keep our
01:47Mediterranean secure, Mediterranean Sea, Mediterranean region, and this is the very
01:52reason why we established a completely new portfolio in the European Commission in order
01:56to deal with these issues.
01:57It's not only about peace and security, it's about economy, it's about development, it's
02:01about environment, but without peace and security this wouldn't be possible, as you know.
02:07So Europe wants to be a player in the region, so this is our motto, we want to be players
02:13and not only payers, because we are paying a lot of money to different countries and
02:18we are not always the first address.
