Birmingham City producing top levels despite being in League One this season

Birmingham City may be in League One, but their performances have been anything but third-tier. 00:13reached the League Cup final as well. So they're in amazing form. It's a great draw for a League

00:19One side who've had this takeover, had this sort of project put in and I'm sure the owners

00:24would have been delighted with a Premier League club at home. It really was a huge chance

00:29to show the rest of the world, the rest of the English football leagues, just what's

00:33cooking at Birmingham City at the moment. They really delivered on the night. They were

00:37so unlucky. You feel maybe that the goal-line technology situation could have changed the

00:42way the result went. But, you know, despite being out of the FA Cup, it's a huge step

00:46in the right direction and it just shows, as I say, the rest of the world, the rest

00:51of the footballing world, where Birmingham City are and, you know, long may that continue.

00:56Absolutely. The atmosphere was cracking at St Andrews and packed out to the rafters.

01:01It was sold out from the home fans as well as the away fans. I think they had about 5,000

01:06a tune. They made plenty of noise. A proper classic FA Cup tie feel from the very first

01:11whistle and beforehand, in fairness, the keep right on rendition. One of the loudest I've

01:16ever heard in that stadium. Just simply incredible. The fireworks as well from the top of the

01:21stadium. I think that's a little bit of a Marmite situation. You either love it or you

01:25hate it. But I thought it was pretty cool having that as a kind of one-off for such

01:29a big occasion. People said, oh, listen, you're only playing Newcastle in the FA Cup fourth

01:33round. But as you mentioned, Charles, it's that feeling of where are they now? Can they

01:37prove that they are on that big stage already, despite being League One? And I think they

01:41did. I know we saw that Nottingham Forest went the distance against Exeter, kind of

01:46a similar situation, but that was a bit more back to the wall for Exeter and being dominated

01:51the whole match. Birmingham went for it against Newcastle. They really did. They scored in

01:55the first minute. They could have made it two or three before the break. It was so,

01:59so impressive. Obviously, Newcastle getting back into the game, two quick-fire goals midway

02:03through that first half. But just the belief around the stadium that, okay, we are here

02:07now. We're going to get to the championship. We are going to be competing. It's not just

02:11a one-off season of joy where we're doing well in League One. We're going to win the

02:15League of E's. Next year, they can also kick on. And I know one performance isn't going

02:20to prove that, but it gives a bit of a glimpse of what we can see. And I think it's very

02:24exciting for the fans and the atmosphere matched that. That goal made the night even more special.

02:29I was right behind that as he struck it. So much power. I couldn't believe it. And everyone

02:34in attendance was just stunned. But he is one of those players that I think is committed

02:38for many years to come. And lots of the other top-tier players that have come into the football

02:43club previous January and summer transfer windows, you think they wouldn't come down

02:48here unless they're here for the long term. Otherwise, why would you join a League One

02:52club? They obviously have been sold by the project and I think they'll be here for many

02:55years to come, hopefully in the championship and then potentially up to the Premier League

02:59as well.
