Okay, I know we're going to be
00:27:11
celebrating the year of the snake,
00:27:14
but we're going to play a song
00:27:16
a song I wrote earlier last year in honor of the year of the dragon, just to send out the year of
00:27:22
the dragon. So I wrote this piece for string quartet originally, the great string quartet
00:27:27
interwoven, and they sounded so good playing it that I wanted to make a version for my band.
00:27:32
So this will feature the great Andy Lin on Erhu, and it's called Dragon. In the myth of the
00:27:39
great emperor's, the great jade emperor's race, which is how we got the animals in the zodiac,
00:27:45
and he challenged different animals to race across a fast flowing river, and the order
00:27:50
that they crossed is the order that they would become his heavenly guards, but then also they
00:27:55
would each get a year in the zodiac. And so the dragon, even though it was the only animal that
00:28:01
had magical powers, did not win the race. He actually came in fifth place, and the reason
00:28:06
is because he helped a rabbit who was stuck clinging to a log. He spent time to help the
00:28:11
rabbit get across. And I like to bring that up because in western cultures, sorry, in eastern
00:28:18
cultures, the dragon is portrayed as a benevolent creature, which is very different from how it's
00:28:23
often portrayed in western culture. So this piece, Dragon, tries to capture the spirit of the animal.

So in the 1920s and 30s, there was a lot of American jazz happening in Shanghai,
00:35:00
which is known as the Paris of the East at the time. There's a lot of cultural exchange happening
00:35:04
in that period before World War II. And there's actually a whole repertoire of music that developed
00:35:09
during that time frame called Shidaichu, or Songs of Our Time. It roughly sounds like movie music
00:35:15
combined with swing and Dixieland plus some Chinese opera influences. And so the style developed over
00:35:22
the years, and we're going to play something from the 1950s. I'm going to need your help on this
00:35:27
one. Okay, so when I go like this, you got to sing it back to me. You may know this one from the
00:35:32
movie Crazy Rich Asians, but it was actually written by the great singer John Hendricks in
00:35:38
1953. It was written for Louis Jordan. And later on in the decade, Grace Chang added some Mandarin
00:35:44
lyrics. So we're going to do the Mandarin version of I want your love. This is again, John Hendricks,

I want you to be my baby. So when I go like this, sing it back to me. All right.

I, I, I want, I want, I want, I want you, I want your love. Why don't you say it?
00:38:27
Why me, why me? I'm the girl for you, so you better start to face me. If you ever lose my love, you know I never can replace you.
00:38:44
It's time for you to start to give me some love. I've got a unit of torch for you that's hotter than nothing.
00:38:48
It's time for you to give me a little turtle dove and hold me tight and do what I tell you.
00:38:52
I, I, I want, I want, I want you, I want your love. Why don't you say it?
00:39:15
Thank you for your beautiful voices.
00:39:25
Oh, thank you guys so much for being here tonight. We really appreciate the opportunity to share some of this music with you.
00:39:31
I want to thank Ted, Amy, and everyone at the 1882 Foundation and the Kennedy Center for having us. It's been such a blast to play here.
00:39:39
Let's hear it one more time. You're listening to Heona Park on the piano, Brian Copeland on the bass,
00:39:50
Ronan Itzik on the drums, and Andy Lin on the erhu and viola.
00:39:58
I'm Stephanie Chu, and we've got one more for you tonight. This is on my album Prime Knot,
00:40:02
and it's an arrangement of a very famous traditional Chinese song called Jasmine Flower.
00:40:07
If you like what you hear, you can take us home with you. We've got some CDs for sale.
00:40:11
Please sign up for our mailing list, which is over by the merch table.
00:40:14
We've got some t-shirts and tote bags, and I'd love to stay in touch, so yes, please feel free to sign up for our mailing list.
