00:30Well, Russell sent me the script and he said, read it, see what female part you like.

00:44And I read it, I said it's wonderful, I love the character.

00:49And the next question was, well, how fast can you learn Turkish?

00:54So of course I said, oh, very fast.

00:57And then I thought, I'll think about it later.

01:00So from that moment, and then he said, the part is yours.

01:03He offered me the part and I was very honoured.

01:06And we met and spoke about the story and the character.

01:10And then I started basically working on my Turkish.

01:13And it was a big challenge because obviously I'm not Turkish, so I wanted to pull it off.

01:19And that was a big responsibility for me.

01:25And I trained a lot with coaches and got Rosetta Stone to learn the language.

01:30Yeah, so that's how I became involved.

01:37Well that's all research and I had to, I watched lots of documentaries, also on Gallipoli,

01:45on the war, the First World War, just to understand the feel.

01:52Also about the country, just the history of Turkey.

01:54I mean, I watched on every subject.

01:57There was not much, it was very hard to find material information about women.

02:04There's a lot of military stuff and war stuff, but not a lot about women.

02:10But I tried and I searched for pictures and, I mean, it's 100 years ago.

02:15So there was just a lot of emerging and understanding the culture.

02:22And I also went to Turkey and met with a woman who was in a similar situation that Ayse is

02:30in the movie.

02:31She was a widow with children, just like my character.

02:37And that also helped me understand, really talking to her helped me understand what the

02:40society was expecting from her, you know, the pressure that she was getting, even when

02:46she's living nowadays, so not 100 years ago.

02:49So it was still the same thing.

02:51So it helped me understand what kind of pressure Ayse could have been going through.

02:58And of course, as you saw in the movie, she's standing against the society, the family,

03:07and goes against what is expected from her.

03:13And tries to protect her little boy, her son, from the truth.

03:21He's lovely, he's great.

03:23He knows, because he's a director, he really knows the language to an actor.

03:28And I mean, because he's an actor himself.

03:31And he just always provided the right circumstances for us on set to be comfortable with.

03:38He knows how the environment and everything around an actor is important.

03:43And he always made sure that it was that way.

03:51I guess you could say that the personal connection is that I was raised by a single mom.

03:56And it's the case in the movie, Ayse raises her little boy by herself.

04:05So maybe in there, you know, just the love and the connection, the strong connection

04:09with your only child, I know what it is.

04:14So maybe unconsciously, I knew what it was like, but I can't really put my finger on it.

04:21It's something unconscious.

04:23You know, I wouldn't really know to tell you exactly how it happens.

04:28It's just the feeling that I know.
