As Dubai's temperature shoots up during the hot summer season, it is becoming increasingly
00:09
difficult to do any kind of outdoor activity, especially more challenging for people who
00:14
do fieldwork.
00:15
GNTV braved the scorching heat to talk to people who spend most of their working hours
00:19
under the sun.
00:21
We asked them about the usual problems, difficulties and health issues that they encounter, how
00:26
they are coping and what measures or remedies they have built to survive the heat.

01:30
During the summer, it's not only the temperature that goes up.
01:34
Health experts point out that the number of heat-related illnesses also increases.
01:39
When you go out and you get exposed to the sun, the first effect is the person gets prone
01:44
to dehydration.
01:45
So there's a lot of loss of fluids from the body through sweat.
01:48
Those sweats are a very cooling effect, yet you lose a lot of salts, particularly sodium
01:54
and potassium, which in turn affects the kidney and the brain and the heart eventually.
01:59
A person gets dehydrated, there are different stages, you know, it may start from cramps
02:03
only.
02:04
Then the cramps, if they are not treated, the person doesn't get rehydrated and he's
02:08
not cooled, he's not put inside a room which is air conditioned, the temperature is not
02:12
brought down.
02:14
Of course, it may pass on to heat exhaustion and then finally eventually it goes up to
02:19
heat stroke.
02:20
And the exposure of skin to the sun, again, that gives you dark skin and it's really irritating
02:29
also the skin gets irritated and eventually it's the UV rays directly hits the skin and
02:35
skin is prone to cancers, various types of cancers.
02:40
And so hydration is really important.
02:42
You need to take precaution in taking lots of fluids and cover yourself completely when
02:48
you go out.
02:49
When we talk about allergies, of course, there's a flare-up in allergies as well because
02:53
as you know, when we talk about allergies, we think about spring season, but in summers
02:59
there are certain allergies when there is especially a lot of dust in the air, gastroenteritis.
03:04
Since food becomes really sensitive, you leave it out for a few minutes and then you're prone
03:08
to get these kinds of GI symptoms.
03:10
Residents, most especially those who work outdoors, must therefore be extra cautious
03:14
and careful.
03:16
Dubai government has itself strictly imposed a mandatory midday break during the summer
03:21
months for laborers who work in the sun.
03:24
So as the summer heat intensifies, it will certainly help to remember a few simple steps
03:28
to beat summer illnesses.
03:30
Drink lots of liquid, stay indoors as much as possible, and exercise regularly to stay
03:35
physically fit.
