00:00
Donegal continues to be devastated by storm A1. Thousands left without
00:04
electricity and water over the last week, many of whom are elderly, vulnerable and
00:09
living in defective concrete homes. I just want the government in this
00:15
chamber over the next few weeks to realise the devastation that's happened
00:20
in Donegal. Affected homeowners face huge safety risks living in homes that are
00:25
defective. The red wind warning came too late. The government needs to address
00:32
health and safety as soon as possible to treat this crisis, the humanitarian
00:37
crisis that's going on with defective concrete homes. There needs to be far
00:41
more and far better coordination between the government and Donegal County
00:46
Council. It's clear that the west and northwest were impacted most due to lack
00:51
of resources and failure to prepare. Many services were also severely
00:56
impacted. A Montessori school in Donegal was without power for
01:02
over a week which affected over 30 families who had no access to childcare.
01:06
The parents were forced to take significant time off work. Twelve days
01:10
later there's still premises in Donegal without electricity and without water.
01:14
There's no doubt the impact of this storm will be felt for a very long time.
01:19
I would like to take this opportunity to pay my respects to Caspar Dudek's
01:24
family, a young man killed tragically in Donegal in Ruffo through this storm.
01:29
His loss will be felt in his local community of Lifford, across the whole
01:34
county. Our thoughts are with his loved ones at this sad time.
