If relegation from Ligue 1 is to be avoided by Bristol Rovers this season, then points
00:05
picked up at the Memorial Stadium will be their saving grace. The recent win at home
00:10
against high-flying Barnsley highlighted that under new head coach Inigo Calderon, the Gaffs
00:15
have what it takes to give any team a competitive game.
00:18
And it was to be another crucial three points for Bristol Rovers as they swept aside Peterborough
00:24
by three goals to nil. For the Gaffs, James Wilson, Isaac Hutchinson and Ruil Sotriou
00:29
were on the score sheet to make it 3-0 before rookie Jade Jones netted an injury time consolation
00:34
for the travelling posh.
00:40
After the match, head coach Calderon described the performance as the best of the season
00:45
so far.
00:46
Yeah, massive. You know, we were talking about the massive game, massive game, massive game.
00:51
I've tried to take a bit of pressure off the players because I say that it's not going
00:57
to make any change. If we had lost today, we would be in the same situation. Now we
01:02
have won but we are in the same situation. It's true that obviously you want to win
01:05
and especially I think the way we did today, it was really good because I think we started
01:10
to show every game a bit better version of ourselves and I think today was really good.
01:15
I think we defended better and what I mean about defending is not the defenders, it's
01:19
everyone on the team. I think we pressed higher better. I think we defended our goal better
01:23
and after with the ball I think we have good spells. I think we have good spells. We are
01:27
able to alternate well to play long, to play short. I think it was overall probably the
01:31
best performance we've played so far.
01:33
Having three different goal scorers was something that also greatly pleased Calderon following
01:38
the three points picked up against Peterborough.
01:41
Yeah, that's good because otherwise if you just rely on one player it's going to be a
01:45
problem because injuries happen or whatever. So having different scorers I think is good
01:51
for the team and as you say the way we score goals, that is great for the boys because
01:56
for example we were talking about the set-pieces that we didn't score before and we were working
01:59
this week a bit more about that and that's good because when you worry about things in
02:04
the training ground after seeing the game it's good. As I say I'm really, really happy
02:09
with the boys today in the way we played and consistently during the 90 minutes. It's true
02:15
that maybe the last five we relaxed a little bit but I had to understand it's normal as
02:19
well that in training you start to do flicky-flickies that you don't really like too much but that's
02:23
part of football.
02:25
Bristol Rovers were also much more solid defensively, something which Calderon made clear had been
02:31
worked on during the week in training.
02:35
We framed the week like that, after Charlton it was like two days, Wigan and Charlton and
02:38
I think we conceded two cheap goals, soft goals and we were talking about, I mean we
02:43
were working about that the whole week, well the whole week, the three days we trained
02:46
and as I say it's not just the defenders but it's obviously the defenders that have to
02:50
have pride of that and I think as I say we defend better, we care more about defending
02:56
our goal.
