Once a coal mining village where soot-faced workers toiled and steam engines made their
00:08
way from the coast to the collieries, to one of the East Coast's most envied and desired
00:14
seaside suburbs, there's always been something incredibly special about Meriwether.
00:21
It's home to one of the world's most famous breaks, lined with beautiful foreshore walks,
00:27
endless national parks and views that will simply take your breath away.
00:34
It's where the Australian bush meets the deep blue, and natural wonders are just part of
00:40
the everyday life.
00:43
It's where you can start your day with a dip in the legendary Meriwether baths, a local
00:49
cafe or just sitting back and taking in the fresh ocean air.
00:55
Where else in the world can you live in a place that captures everything we love most
01:00
about coastal living?
01:02
This is Meriwether, and there's nowhere else you'd rather spend the best days of your life.
01:10
Set amongst the lush greenery of native gums, where natural beauty converges into the bustling
01:16
city of Newcastle, you'll find Meriwether Golf Club.
01:21
Today you'll see manicured greens surrounded by undulating slopes, treacherous sand bunkers
01:28
and eucalypt-lined fairways.
01:31
This natural gem wasn't always destined to become a championship golf course.
01:37
The history of our club goes back to the early 30s.
01:41
There was a German man trying to grow grapes down this fairway here right behind me, too
01:46
close to the city, but while he was trying to grow the grapes there was a group of gentlemen
01:49
who were hitting golf balls around.
01:51
They used to go in amongst the vines and pull their golf balls out and they decided let's
01:55
build a golf course.
01:58
Once a site of pastoral lands where cattle roamed, its true vision was realised in 1933
02:04
when £10 secured the lease to create one of the region's first golf clubs.
02:09
It was rocks, it was barren, there was no trees.
02:13
From the early years when I was here you had to wear a tie, if you wore shorts you had
02:17
to wear long socks.
02:20
It's changed dramatically.
02:23
Over the years this grand club has grown in reputation to become one of the most prestigious
02:28
in the area.
02:29
We were very excited to be invited by the Merriweather Golf Club Board to put forward
02:35
a joint venture proposal to do the retirement resort which is going to be known as the Merriweather
02:40
Residences.
02:41
We wanted to bring the very best in design, interior spaces, we wanted to bring that track
02:47
record and those local trades and passionate men and women that work for us in the Newcastle
02:52
region and combine that into a product that is worthy of the space that the Merriweather
02:59
Golf Club are dedicating to our site.
03:03
Creating an architectural masterpiece of this quality in such a sought after suburb is not
03:10
taken lightly.
03:12
An enviable team of leading architects and designers have committed to producing a landmark
03:19
that will leave a lasting legacy, a unique development of a kind never seen in this area.
03:27
Retirement living isn't about putting people in small boxes anymore on a city fringe, it's
03:32
about investing in a level of finish that my parents are going to love, that I would
03:37
be proud to put my mum and dad in.
03:40
A marriage of nature, architecture and landscape designed to integrate with this remarkable
03:47
environment and make Merriweather such a special place to live.
03:52
A place where champions have been made and people from all over have come to enjoy this
03:58
natural jewel in Newcastle's crown.
04:01
And now a new chapter is being written in its fabled history with a new icon, the Merriweather.
