French PM Bayrou faces no-confidence vote after forcing budget plan through parliament

The confidence vote will likely be held as early as Wednesday, with the hard-left France Unbowed (LFI) stating it will put forward a motion to try and topple François Bayrou's recently appointed government.

00:00Will the French Prime Minister François Beyrou's recently appointed government survive a no-confidence vote?

00:10After forcing this year's long-overdue budget plan through Parliament without a vote on Monday afternoon,

00:16Beyrou now faces a no-confidence motion as early as Wednesday.

00:22A total of 288 votes are needed from MPs to successfully topple the government.

00:28And for the moment, it's the hard-left France Unbowed Party that said that they will be putting forward

00:34two separate motions, one against the budget plan and another one against the social security budget.

00:40As a reminder, Beyrou's predecessor, Michel Barnier, was ousted in December

00:45after the far-right and the left-wing coalition, the NFP, joined forces.

00:52However, this time, the Socialist Party, part of the NFP, said on Monday that it has chosen not to vote against Beyrou just yet.

01:00The far-right National Rally Party told us that they're still hesitating, but that they will make a decision by Wednesday afternoon.

01:07But without this crucial socialist vote, well, it looks like Beyrou might be able to survive a confidence vote this week,

01:17meaning that the budget plan could be adopted as early as end of February.

01:22This contentious bill plans to cut an eye-watering 30 billion euros and raise taxes by 20 billion euros.

01:31France has been under pressure from the EU for its public deficit, reaching 6% in 2024,

01:39more than the double the percentage allowed by Brussels.
