How China is helping to power Spain's transition to clean energy

The China Three Gorges Corporation is the largest clean energy group in China and has been investing heavily in European renewables too.  Operating in the UK, Germany, Italy, Poland, Portugal, and beyond, its European subsidiary has just won an award in Spain.   Ken Browne reports from Madrid.   #Spain #China #Green

00:00The China Three Gorges Corporation or CTG is one of the biggest energy companies on the planet.

00:07It has helped boost China's annual renewable capacity to the largest in the world.

00:13Now CTG is increasing investment in Europe too.

00:18The last operation carried out by CTG Europe in Spain is a solar portfolio named Refraction,

00:26a PV plant with nearly 500 megawatts in the region of Maceo.

00:34That's the biggest solar plant in the country, part of over a billion US dollars the company has spent in Spain.

00:41CTG received an award for its commitment to decarbonization and new energy cooperation,

00:47presented by Catedra China, a Spanish organization promoting China-Spain cooperation.

00:54We'd like to thank Catedra China for this recognition.

01:00China Three Gorges Europe is a good example of a company where there are many co-workers

01:09from Spain, China and other countries working together smoothly.

01:13And CTG is formally committed to the EU energy transition.

01:19Spain's ambassador to China, Marta Bethansos Roig, was also in Madrid at the ceremony.

01:26Solar, wind, offshore, inshore, it's like getting into science fiction.

01:33We are very much engaged in this kind of new approach to a sustainable economy.

01:40I believe that both China and Spain can be very complementary.

01:45Spain is positioning itself as a connector country between China and Europe.

01:51After Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's official visit to Beijing last year,

01:55Spain then abstained on the European Union vote on tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles.

02:02Now China is investing heavily in Spain's goal to become a green energy leader.

02:08That includes Chinese electric car battery maker CATL's 4 billion plus US dollar investment

02:15in a gigafactory in Zaragoza.

02:18And the High Green and Envision Group sign off on over 3 billion dollars worth of green hydrogen projects.

02:25So as China helps accelerate Europe's green transformation, Spain is fast emerging as a preferred partner.
