00:05How will these demographic changes in the forces possibly reshape the army?

00:11And how important is diversity?

00:15Yes, good evening to you.

00:17Diversity is really important, but the danger is sometimes momentum gets away with us

00:22and suddenly diversity becomes about targets.

00:25It's about percentages.

00:27I know from my military career, when I started in the military, we didn't have any female pilots.

00:32We had to recruit a few, and actually there was some degree of scepticism at the start,

00:37but I served with some truly outstanding female pilots.

00:40The whole point about diversity is there may be untapped areas of your society

00:45which have some skills and experience which could be valuable.

00:48What you mustn't do is suddenly, though, make that around percentages,

00:52and the risk is then you start to compromise your operational effectiveness.
