this uh reports Aaron Wilson, Clint Texans interviewing their current quarterbacks coach
00:07
Gerard Johnson early this week for the offensive coordinator position.
00:12
He has been instrumental in CJ Stroud's growth also in the report but he uh he is he is most
00:20
definitely not a surprise. We had James Palmer on on Friday and he said he is a very serious
00:28
candidate and as serious as such we hear he is getting interviewed for it not a surprise there.
00:34
Um so that is that is taking place this is getting serious. Do you think there's a
00:40
situation in which like he could really blow them away and and and this is this could be the next
00:46
OC? Yeah look yeah absolutely I think there's there's a chance that that that he could get in
00:50
a meeting room uh and and now now everything shifts right it's not about it's not about
00:56
you know being a former player and playing the quarterback position at a high level and being
01:00
able to communicate at a high level and knowing CJ Stroud now it switches to from an overall
01:07
play design game plan play calling you know can you kick next level higher level do you feel like
01:15
that between your experience with him and the conversations you're having with him now do you
01:20
feel like that is the right direction is this a guy because I I do believe and I pray and I hope
01:27
that this is super important to D'Amico Rhines and Nick Casario and I use Laramie Tunsell because
01:33
if we all know Laramie's all know the the ripple effect that a guy like Laramie has on the offensive
01:41
like whoever this guy is needs to have the ability to command more from Laramie Tunsell on down
01:52
do you does does is a guy that's been in the building that's that's young in the profession
01:59
does he have that ability as well right I mean so there's a lot of there's a lot of of of factors
02:06
here with this offensive coordinator hire that I think when you go with a guy that's never done it
02:12
you better be sure fire about a couple of other things right and and it's it's more so about
02:18
again being able to coach the position an individual drill and being able to coach the
02:22
position in a meeting room and and being really close to CJ Stroud that is all great for an
02:28
offensive for a quarterback coach means absolutely nothing as an offensive coordinator in fact I can
02:35
argue at this point in time that they they need to distance themselves a little bit from CJ Stroud
02:40
see that's like the CJ Stroud it runs everything and CJ Stroud is the head coach's buddy and CJ
02:47
Stroud like you you can argue that hey man what this offense needs is somebody that's a little
02:52
less buddy buddy with everybody well that's what I was gonna I was gonna say to you what would it
02:55
signal to you like if it like straight up what would it signal to you if Gerard Johnson got the
03:03
job and to me I could be dead wrong not not that he's not qualified for it because I could see him
03:11
getting a job with the Jets hell he's as qualified as Bobby Slowick was
03:16
hell even also passing in corner so like but the the number one thing that I can't help for
03:23
what it would signal to me is CJ really wants him like that like to me if he got if it were
03:32
Gerard Johnson to this it would be like CJ really really wants him now in some ways like for some
03:39
people I think people hear that and say okay yeah CJ shows she CJ should have some some some real say
03:46
so in it but that's the part to me where I don't like I don't know if it should be a like a CJ
03:53
really wants him I I like I kind of agree with you I think it should almost think it should be
03:57
somebody that neither one of them D'Amico or CJ have a relationship with so that person can come
04:03
in and feel very comfortable implementing what it is that they want to implement and say and do what
04:08
they want to do agree wholeheartedly Ron you you can argue that with the the Texans offensive
04:16
coordinator search high up on the priority list should be I'm gonna rule with an iron fist and
04:24
I don't want to be anybody's friend I don't want to be Laramie Tunstall's friend I don't want to be
04:28
lenient on Laramie Tunstall I don't want to be CJ Stroud's buddy I don't want to be lenient to CJ
04:34
Stroud I I don't want to be anybody's buddy I'm coming in here and I'm putting my foot down we're
04:39
going to demand perfection across the board whether we're talking route running or we're
04:44
talking about the the footwork the mechanics and techniques associated with executing certain
04:49
blocks in the pass game and the run game you're talking about chips with the tight ends and being
04:54
more physical just to the funnel right I don't want to be nobody's buddy this is how the Texans
04:59
offense is going to operate and if you don't agree if you don't want to operate if you don't want to
05:04
fall in line and you don't want to show up and show out and show these this level of physicality
05:08
this level of technique work this level of commitment then you can be a great player
05:14
like D'Amico said many a times it just ain't here you can move on and be a great player in the NFL
05:20
it's just not here if you're not going to do things this way on the offensive side of the
05:25
football I believe that high up if not number one extremely high up on the priority list
05:32
that's what the Texans need an offensive coordinator not another guy that's that is
05:37
just familiar and close to CJ the only the only way it would make sense and they and they're the
05:41
only ones who know is if Clint this was just simply a deal where Bobby Slowick was just going
05:50
rogue and he was just he was just like nah man I'm I'm I'd to hell with any of anybody else I'm
05:58
rolling on my own and it was clearly a deal of nah like everybody else wanted to play ball and do
06:04
do what was needed except for except for him and that's just got to be the change that that's the
06:10
only one but we won't ever know that they they're the ones who know that but well that's if that's
06:15
the case the offensive line coach got a raw deal well and and to me the reason why I don't know
06:20
that I that I lean so much on that is Clint if that was the case that you would have made the
06:24
move on Bobby Slowick right you know you would you would have moved on him during the season
06:30
if that was if that was it like instead of just letting it continue to to go so I don't know
06:37
we'll see the other part on this Clint is Jonathan Jones CBS yesterday during the pregame show
06:44
talked about Chip Kelly and said Ohio State's offensive coordinator Chip Kelly
06:49
Chip Kelly is a top candidate for this job listen I tips a little out there he's a little different
06:57
chips success has come more in college than it did with the Eagles or the Niners in the NFL
07:04
but I think he does fit the
07:09
yeah he's a guy that comes in that I I don't think we'll have any issue ruling and running
07:16
this thing he's an experience has been he's been more been a head coach on the college level the
07:21
NFL level he's a guy that can run the show yeah look I've I've flipped on on my my opinion last
07:28
week of Chip Kelly it was kind of thrown out there you threw it out there to kind of caught
07:31
me by surprise and I was like ah you know I haven't heard a lot of guys that really like
07:34
Chip Kelly so I don't know if I'd go the Chip Kelly route right um I'm still up in here with
07:39
it by the way I know I flipped on it look I I think that is I think it's as I just said I think
07:44
it's more necessary that you get a guy in here that don't take no crap right you just fall in
07:50
line get it he will not take crap from any players anywhere no matter how good you have been or how
07:55
good you are at this point in time so I I've I've done a 180 on on Chip Kelly I would have no
08:01
problem at all I could get completely in on Chip I'm not the biggest Chip Kelly fan but I could
08:06
definitely get in on Chip Kelly being the offensive coordinator for the Houston Texans all he's got to
08:11
do is handle the offense and he can handle that offense with that iron fist that we're talking
08:14
about it can demand can demand physicality of these guys Ron that's one thing he brought to
08:19
the table even back in his Oregon days my man's gonna put a run game together I mean they're
08:23
gonna they're gonna put a a a dynamic run game together he believes in being physical and
08:31
apparently he rules with an iron fist man I I would have no problem with with Chip Kelly being
08:36
in here and him being the offensive coordinator so um yeah that that would be that'd be solid yeah
08:43
I yeah I don't I don't know um I think that the one the one thing that does help is
08:51
he clearly we didn't hear any rumbles or issues with Ryan Day now it's one year yeah we didn't
08:56
hear any rumbles he's got his ass up out of here he lost his D coordinator got up out of there
09:00
came to the league yeah yeah so I you know that that's that's good he showed he could work like
09:06
he could work with it right and I think this is this but to me this is what is what is D'Amico
09:12
looking for does D'Amico want to have some say so in it because this is a big move for D'Amico
09:19
right like it this one's got to be right right and and does he want more say so or does he
09:24
legit want this thing to be like Sean McVay and Sean McVay said here I'm hiring Wade Phillips
09:30
and Wade it's yours or or does he or does he want a little bit more input yeah yeah look the the
09:36
D'Amico input thing is is is interesting I would imagine he he wants to make the decision him damn
09:41
self at this point in time the the the other interesting thing Ron uh about the Texans
09:47
offensive coordinator search to me is and and the fact that Chip Kelly is being brought up and I
09:52
don't know how credible it is or not but but just bringing up the chip can do believe that the
09:57
Texans offensive coordinator search or their next hire I do believe it needs to be go hire the best
10:05
guy that is willing to take the leap if that's stealing somebody else's offensive coordinator
10:10
whether it's somebody in the league or somebody that just won a national championship at the
10:13
college level I do think that this search needs to be wider than just the same retreads that were
10:20
just fired for underperforming somewhere else or the inexperienced guys in the house the Texans
10:26
are at a spot where it is it is we're going to go from divisional round to competing for a Super Bowl
10:31
and I think this is one place this is the one place where I think major change could occur
10:36
in the right hire could immediately push them into that conversation that that would that would
10:42
necessitate the the the or that would facilitate the necessary change on offense that I believe
10:49
could put them in the serious talks about truly contending but you got to go take somebody's
10:55
offensive coordinator you can't just settle for somebody in-house or settle for somebody
10:58
that's available in the streets.
