A new wildfire that broke out north of Los Angeles on Wednesday (Jan 22) rapidly spread to more than 9,400 acres, forcing mandatory evacuation orders for more than 31,000 people.

00:00A new wildfire that broke out north of Los Angeles on Wednesday rapidly spread to more
00:07than 9,400 acres, forcing mandatory evacuation orders for more than 31,000 people.
00:16Authorities said the huge fire, burning in the Castaic Lake area, was an immediate threat
00:21to life, and Southern California remains under a red flag warning for extreme fire risk caused
00:27by strong and dry winds.
00:30Within hours, the fire grew to over half the size of the Eaton Fire, one of the two major
00:35wildfires affecting the Los Angeles area.
00:38They said they have the upper hand on the fire, but admitted the blaze would be difficult
00:43to contain.
00:45The Hughes Fire is now estimated to be over 9,400 acres with zero percent containment,
00:54with no structures reported damaged or destroyed.
00:59We have over 4,000 firefighting personnel assigned to the incident, and we had a very
01:04robust ground and air response to the incident that you see behind me.
01:10Southern California has gone without significant rain for nine months, contributing to hazardous
01:15conditions.
01:16However, rain is forecast from Saturday to Monday, which could help the firefighters.
01:22Meanwhile, the two deadly fires that devastated Los Angeles are now more under control.
01:28The Eaton Fire, which burned 14,021 acres east of Los Angeles, had been 91 percent contained.
01:36The larger Palisades Fire, which had consumed 23,448 acres on the west side of the city,
01:43had been 68 percent contained.
01:46The two fires have killed around 28 people and damaged or destroyed nearly 16,000 structures.
