I'm Conor, or Subtrex. I've been going under Subtrex since September 2020 when I released my
00:06
first release, Nightdraver. I don't even remember theirs, only four years ago. Nightdraver,
00:14
and then went on to release, I think I've released now about 21 tracks, including one EP,
00:21
and another track where I got remixes on from people. I've released lots of edits as well on
00:28
Soundcloud, which is where I sort of started out. So, in September of this last year, 2024,
00:35
I signed to an agency, Act Like Adults, they're also my management as well, and we've been working
00:42
closely to try and find a way for me to go over to Berlin, and on the 7th of February I'll be
00:47
playing in Berlin in Club Ost with a nicer line-up. It's a nice line-up, I'm really excited
00:54
for that. I'm playing at 6am in the morning until 8am, so I'll be interesting to see how that works
00:59
out, but I'm really excited for it, I'm really looking forward to it. I mean, playing at what
01:04
is the greatest nightclub scene in the world, it must be a tremendous feat to yourself.
01:10
I'm just really thankful for the opportunity, and I've always,
01:15
Berlin, I think of it as the dance capital of the world, nearly. There's so many people who
01:21
have went there and just went on to become successful, and I just hope that this could
01:26
be the start of something for me, where I can take this opportunity and do something with it as well.
01:32
Being from Derry, like another city which is full of and rich of music culture, it's just, it'll be
01:38
good for me, I think, to do this for myself as well.
01:41
Do you feel like you'll be very popular in Derry when you're over there?
01:45
Well, hopefully I can, like I said, I got a DJ from Durham,
01:49
anywhere I go, I'll always wear my heart on my sleeve, like I'm from Derry, I'll always be from
01:53
Derry, and hopefully I can maybe go across, around the world and bring back some of that
01:59
experience that I've earned around the world, and maybe put it on the Derry wee bit,
02:03
just not bring it back to the way it used to be, but give it that revival that it might need a wee
02:09
bit of, so hopefully I can do that. I started my journey in September of 2020, as I said,
02:16
released my debut, released Night Driver, and I got that contact that reached out to this YouTube
02:20
channel called Handpicked Music, I think it was, and I paid them £30 to upload it to the YouTube
02:26
channel, just any way to get my name out there, and I think the video only got like 5k views,
02:31
like but it was still getting my name out there, and like people discovering my music, which was
02:35
important for me, because like I just wanted people to hear the stuff that I was making.
02:40
I've always been like a creative person, so I studied graphic design and the tech, and then
02:44
was going to uni to do graphic design again, but ended up dropping out to pursue music,
02:48
so I've always been like someone who has created something and then showed it to the world,
02:53
like so I think it was sort of inevitable, it was sort of inevitable that music was going to
02:59
fall under the same sort of process. When was it that you realised music was the thing that
03:05
you wanted in your life? Well, I grew up in a music household as well, my dad just made
03:12
music his entire life, he plays music, he writes his own music, he's played in bands, and I've sort
03:18
of always grown up listening to music and having music on in the house, so as I said it was
03:24
inevitable that I was going to follow sort of in line with that musical career, but I think I only
03:31
started creating music myself in 2018, down the road I found a studio when I was like 17, 17 aye,
03:42
so I only started making it when I was 17, and the earlier you start the better, I think definitely
03:48
because people always say it takes 10 years to make it, no matter what, like you will, well most
03:53
of the time it takes 10 years, I can't really say it always takes 10 years, but most of the time it
03:57
takes 10 years to make it, and the way I look at it is if you don't have that amount of experience
04:02
over the course of 10 years, like where you've experienced like say playing like your first gig
04:08
and stuff like that, and then progressing into where you are now, like you're not really gonna
04:13
have that experience of knowing what's, it's hard to describe, like I always say slow success
04:21
bulge character, but like fast and quick success will just create an ego. So where do you say that
04:25
you're grateful that you kind of like work to where you are? Aye, well I'm still working and as I said I've
04:30
only been doing it four years, like so I'm not even halfway there yet in my eyes, like so there's still
04:34
a lot of work to put on, like but I'm happy with how it's going, and I'm happy with how people
04:39
are supporting me, I can't thank the people of Derry enough, like my friends and family are just always
04:43
supporting, and it's great to see because Derry is a musical city, and like it's good, maybe
04:49
electronic music is, it's always been a musical city, front bands and traditional music, so maybe
04:54
electronic music is just the new type, so it's great, I'm happy with where it's going.
05:02
Last question, is there any else in the world that is like your dream destination to play?
05:09
Everywhere, I don't say that lightly, I literally mean I want to play everywhere, like I've always,
05:15
because like growing up I travelled extensively anyway, like we would have been
05:21
very fortunate to go on lots of holidays and see like different countries anyway, so
05:25
I've always to be able to tie in music and travel together, it's a life dream of mine.
