Treasury Minister: ‘no discussions’ have taken place over devolving Crown Estate

Devolved issues can often be a minefield. The Welsh government have responsibility over some issues, and some they don’t. The crown estate is one field Wales don’t have authority over the issue, but discussions have been ongoing. Or have they, the First Minster says differently to others.

00:07revenue for the Treasury and the King. It's officially owned by the Monarch but can't

00:11be sold by them and is managed by the Crown Estate Commissioners across England, Wales

00:15and Northern Ireland, but there have been calls to devolve the issue to the Welsh Government.

00:19It happened in Scotland in 2017, so now they're in charge of what happens to the Crown Estate,

00:24bringing in millions of pounds for the country. But there have been some confusion over whether

00:28the same discussions have taken place in Wales. The First Minister, Eluned Morgan, has said

00:33that she's had conversations about devolving the Crown Estate, saying that she's said she's

00:37brought it up with the Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, but Plaid Cymru says that's not the

00:41same thing as official discussions with the UK Government. UK Treasury Minister Darren

00:45Jones, who's the Minister who oversees the Crown Estate, has said that no such discussions

00:50have taken place. The Crown Estate in Wales is worth over £600 million and makes up almost

00:55two-thirds of the seabed around the country.
