You and I especially, Sean, I think, have been getting attacked over and over again
00:04
by people who traditionally and normally love us, because we warned everybody,
00:10
hey, don't get too wrapped up in the officiating, and then, by GAR!
00:18
I'm like, these people won! They won!
00:21
I have been under attack, non-stop!
00:25
Me too.
00:25
By being me. I don't mind being hated and despised by various people,
00:32
but the people who I want to like me are also angry at me right now.
00:36
This is the one thing I'd say about this. I'm angry, but it's a little bit different.
00:41
I'm not mad at the officials themselves, because honestly, the way that that rule is enforced,
00:49
the way it's written in the playbook, and the way they expect the officials to call it,
00:55
it's bogus, and Pat Mahomes exploits it to an extreme degree.
01:00
He takes a rule that is meant to protect the safety of quarterbacks,
01:05
and then he goes and puts himself in danger, consciously, to draw flags
01:12
and exploit a rule that's supposed to protect quarterbacks.
01:16
The NFL, for whatever reason, has decided not to make the fake slide illegal.
01:21
Pat Mahomes is a practitioner of that.
01:23
And then the NFL basically instructs the officials to, whenever there's any doubt about it at all,
01:31
throw the flag, and then after that, they won't make it reviewable.
01:35
So the second unnecessary roughness, I think, was the most egregious,
01:43
in that Mahomes had the chance to run out of bounds, easily.
01:46
It was right there for the taking.
01:48
Instead, he put himself back into danger, and ran towards three full-speed running defenders,
01:56
and then basically just, and then slid late,
01:59
puts the defenders in an impossible position where they can't help but hit them,
02:03
or worry about the fake slide or anything else,
02:05
and end up getting penalized for it and extending a drive.
02:09
It just, it's unacceptable.
02:11
They gotta fix this.
02:12
I'll blame, it's the competition committee, it's Pat Mahomes himself,
02:17
because it's Bush League bogus crap that he doesn't really need to do.
02:21
He's damn good enough already.
02:24
And then also, look, it's on the coaches and owners too.
02:26
Why have you not put more pressure on the competition committee?
02:29
This is as much on D'Amico and Cal McNair as it is on anybody else here,
02:33
because they allow this crap to exist.
02:35
Yeah.
02:36
They're out of my system.
02:37
Yeah, no, no, no, you're absolutely right.
02:39
And I think just specific to that Mahomes play,
02:41
because we're gonna hear from D'Amico on this,
02:44
Will Anderson Jr. on this in just a second.
02:47
Troy Aikman on this.
02:48
Man, Pat Mahomes almost broke Troy Aikman on Saturday afternoon.
02:51
Like, Troy was ready to run down to the field himself
02:54
and strangle Patrick Mahomes, I think.
02:55
That specific play, it's not just running.
02:59
I'm fine with guys that can get out of bounds and running back into danger
03:02
if they're actually trying to gain yards.
03:04
You know what I mean?
03:05
Like, if you're running back in-
03:05
He was seeking contact.
03:06
If you're running back in there and you're putting a shoulder down,
03:10
or you're actually running like a running,
03:11
like Josh Allen would run back into it-
03:12
If you're making forward progress.
03:14
Yes.
03:14
Right.
03:15
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
03:16
He was running laterally.
03:17
I have no problem with a guy not getting out of bounds
03:19
if he's trying to act like a football player,
03:22
not like James Harden.
03:23
You know what I mean?
03:24
Like, he-
03:24
Right.
03:25
And then there's the flop later in the game.
03:27
Like, Mahomes is a great player.
03:30
Maybe the greatest player of this particular segment of football
03:34
that we're in, you know, last seven or eight years.
03:36
Yeah.
03:37
That stuff's a joke.
03:38
Like, that is an out-and-out, that's a flat-out joke.
03:42
Mahomes should be ridiculed for that stuff.
03:44
The flopping, especially.
03:47
Flopping needs to be fined heavily, especially for quarterbacks
03:49
because they make so much damn money.
03:51
The fact that it's not reviewable,
03:54
the fact that the foot first slide in close quarters is never-
03:59
It's never the best way to protect yourself as a quarterback.
04:03
Case Keenum said as much when we had him on a few weeks ago.
04:06
You know, what he tells young guys all the time is,
04:08
if you're going to slide feet first, you better have room to do it
04:12
because the last thing standing, the last thing remaining to hit
04:16
by any defender, whether he tries to hit you or not, is your head.
04:20
And it's dumb.
04:21
Like, if Pam Mahomes genuinely wanted to avoid contact there,
04:24
he would have turtled and gone down just to the ground.
04:27
And it's just, it's so damn un-American.
04:32
It's just wrong.
04:33
And was it a factor in the game?
04:34
Yes.
04:35
I'm kind of wired to try to not blame officiating
04:38
because officiating is like a weather event.
04:41
It's going to happen.
04:42
You're going to have bad-
04:43
This one bothers me because the actual rule and the way it's enforced,
04:47
not the individual officials themselves, the actual rule itself is bogus.
04:51
And it's on-
04:53
I blame Cal McNair and D'Amico Ryans as much as anybody else.
04:56
Get this crap fixed in the offseason.
04:58
Peyton Manning used to-
04:59
Peyton Manning used to exploit the rule book all the time.
05:02
Right.
05:02
They fixed it.
05:03
They changed two specific rules because Peyton Manning was dodgy in that manner.
05:08
As the local face of ownership and coaches, you blame them.
05:11
I'm just picturing one of them getting in their car and turning on the radio like,
05:14
what did I do?
05:16
Get this crap taken care of.
05:17
Yeah, you're right.
05:18
You know, it's bogus.
05:19
It's bad for football.
05:20
I agree.
05:21
No, I agree with you.
05:22
Here was D'Amico after the game and didn't exactly mention the ref by name,
05:27
but boy, this sure does seem like a tip of the hat at the officiating here.
05:31
We knew going into this game, man, it was us versus everybody, right?
05:35
When I say everybody, it's everybody.
05:37
All of whatever, everybody, the naysayers, the doubt,
05:41
right, everybody we had to go against today.
05:45
And, you know, going with that, knowing going into this game, what we were up against,
05:51
we can't make the mistakes that we made, right?
05:53
We had a lot of self-inflicted mistakes that happened, whether it's special teams,
05:58
not converting our kicks defensively, not being where we're supposed to be in coverage,
06:04
offensively, not protecting our quarterback and keeping them clean.
06:07
So, you know, you marry that on top of everything else that we had to deal with.
06:12
It's going to be a really tough uphill battle.
06:14
Okay, and so the pause there, right before he said everybody again, to me,
06:18
that pause was clearly, you may as well put referees in that blank right there
06:21
if we were transcribing it.
06:24
But D'Amico acknowledging at the back end there that, yeah,
06:27
there's plenty of the Texans did wrong in this game.
06:30
And we absolutely should acknowledge that.
06:33
Like the Texans, to Seth's point earlier,
06:35
the referees didn't lose this game for the Texans.
06:38
It was an element in the game not going their way, to be sure.
06:40
But they outgamed the Chiefs by 124 yards.
06:44
They didn't turn the ball over.
06:46
They were well over 50% on third down in this game.
06:49
Like they kept the chains moving in this game.
06:51
They were-
06:51
Honestly, going back and watching the second half again,
06:55
C.J. Stroud played magnificently.
06:58
Yes.
06:58
The play, when he had actual time to throw,
07:01
and to the receivers he was throwing to,
07:04
without Nico Collins on the field for much of the second,
07:07
like he made some incredible throws.
07:09
Yeah.
07:10
It was a great personal performance by him.
07:12
He was tight windowing John Mechie and Xavier Hutchinson in this game.
07:16
So they were 10 of 17 on third down.
07:18
They held the ball seven minutes longer than the Chiefs.
07:21
In a game against the team that held the ball for 10 of the final 11 minutes,
07:25
the last time these two teams played a month ago,
07:28
they held the ball for seven minutes longer.
07:29
Again, I do this exercise, Seth,
07:31
like you told me those things before the game,
07:33
that they were going to do these things, the Texans, like blindly.
07:36
I would have said, I bet they win this game.
07:38
If they're 10 of 17 on third down,
07:40
if they're out possessing and out gaining the Chiefs significantly,
07:43
they're not turning the ball over on the road in this game.
07:45
Are you kidding me?
07:46
And yet the F-ups were so bad.
07:50
It wasn't just the penalties that Mahomes got for being Mahomes.
07:53
They had other very bad penalties in this game.
07:56
The eight sacks allowed are the huge thing.
07:58
And then that there was a sea of them,
07:59
a barrage of them when you're trying to come back in a one possession game.
08:03
The special teams, Frank Ross and his crew,
08:06
picked the worst time to be the worst unit for this team on Saturday.
08:10
They were awful.
08:12
And the defense let Travis Kelsey kill them slowly throughout the afternoon.
08:16
This is okay.
08:16
The special teams.
08:17
I mean, the only person outside of Houston,
08:19
who's happy about the way that game was officiated was Kymie Fairbairn.
08:23
Cause he hasn't been lambasted nearly enough for whatever the hell that was.
08:28
Whatever the hell that was.
08:29
He was lucky to make the one field goal he did make.
08:32
It was, it was really, really bad.
08:34
God, that's right.
08:34
He barely snuck that one in there.
08:36
Tommy Townsend with that 34 yard punt when you really needed a good point.
08:42
He needed it.
08:42
Yeah.
08:42
They got it.
08:43
The Chiefs got the ball at midfield.
08:45
The Texans defense, I was harsher on them after the game than I should have been.
08:50
Just because I forgot how bad the field position was on that touchdown drive.
08:55
After the Tommy Townsend 34 yard point.
08:58
The kickoff return, Chris Boyd doing whatever the hell he was doing.
09:03
That was just a mess.
09:04
And a disaster.
09:05
That was really, really bad.
09:06
Yeah, that was frustrating.
09:07
It was bad.
09:09
Look, the offensive line, I knew they were going to lose some snaps in that.
09:13
I guess, I don't know exactly why they felt like for four quarters,
09:17
Shaq Mason was going to at some point turn it around and start playing good football.
09:22
Okay, there's that.
09:24
I'm not mad at Bobby Slowick for putting, for having, for having Dalton Schultz
09:30
on a defensive end on that one sack.
09:33
I'm mad at Dalton Schultz.
09:34
They were, look, look, the Chiefs were blitzing like crazy.
09:37
They were sending six man blitzes over and over and over again.
09:40
Yeah, at times when you do that, you're going to end up with a tight end on a defensive end.
09:43
Try to slow him down a smidgen.
09:45
Can you slow him down a smidgen?
09:47
The running backs were awful in pass protection and in blitz pickup.
09:51
The eighth sacks is unacceptable.
09:53
It's not like, I saw that one guy on Twitter, fluffy foofoo bear or whatever,
09:58
said that he was adamant that, look, look, the Texans were sad
10:02
after those bad calls went against them.
10:05
And that's why, all right, are we really going to do this?
10:07
Are we going to be talking about your football players being sad?
10:11
I'm sorry, I didn't realize the offensive line was depressed the entire season
10:14
and that's why pass protection was so bad.
10:17
I didn't realize that Dalton Schultz only pass blocks when he's got the warm fuzzies.
10:21
And if he's got the cold pricklies, it's not a good day for it.
10:24
No, they got to hold up their end of the bargain.
10:27
The offense just simply wasn't good enough this year.
10:30
They did some really good things in this game.
10:32
I thought CJ Stroud was really good individually.
10:36
I'll make some excuses for him because the wide receivers,
10:39
they were banged up enough going into the game.
10:41
Then Nico Collins is on the field.
10:43
Apparent, maybe according to floofy bear,
10:46
he was on the sideline with melancholy instead of an actual injury.
10:50
Yeah, yeah.
10:51
Boy, did you see the play that people thought maybe Nico got popped in that game?
10:56
Like the play that got him that injury in that game?
10:58
But he got chipped downfield by a linebacker, like popped right in the ribs.
11:02
By a linebacker, yeah.
