00:00
Good evening everyone, and welcome to the 4th Canadian Championships 2025 here in Laval.
00:17
I am Elisabeth Paradis, and I will be your host for the Senior Freeriding Program.
00:23
I am once again joined by Laurence Darvaux, our analyst.
00:27
Laurence won the Canadian Championships in 2019 with her Nova team,
00:32
and participated in the World Championships that same year.
00:35
Hello Laurence.
00:36
Hello, how are you?
00:37
I am very well, and you?
00:38
Absolutely, I am very excited for the evening.
00:41
A beautiful skating night is waiting for us.
00:43
In the next few minutes, we will crown our first senior Canadian champions,
00:49
in synchronized skating.
00:51
We remember that yesterday was a very intense competition.
00:54
Can you refresh our memory a little bit?
00:56
Absolutely, a very intense competition, and we didn't expect anything less.
01:02
We talked about it a little bit, the Elite 12 category and the Senior category
01:07
are now a mixed category.
01:10
We have the Black Gold team, composed of 12 skaters,
01:13
a new team that will take place in the national scene in the coming years.
01:18
They are far behind the others, but they are still here,
01:22
and it is really a pleasure to have a West Canadian team with us.
01:25
Next, we have the three teams that are switching places on the podium,
01:29
and for the two world places in recent years.
01:32
There is Nexus, who is in third place with 68.59 points.
01:38
We have Nova, who is in second place with a 75.13,
01:43
and the Supremes are in first place with a score of 79.53.
01:48
It is the highest score in the world for the time being this season,
01:51
so they certainly stood out.
01:54
They are also the three-time world champions.
01:56
It's not for nothing, they are here to defend their title once again this year.
01:59
So we are going to have a different free program.
02:02
The three teams have never competed in the same competition this season.
02:07
So it's tonight that it happens, we'll be able to see that.
02:10
So we'll be back in a few seconds at the ice.
02:53
Next, we have the three teams that are switching places on the podium.

04:16
Hello again everyone.
04:18
This is Elisabeth Paradis, your host for the event of Free Synchronized Skating at the Seniors.
04:25
I am accompanied by our dear analyst, Laurence Darvaux.
04:29
We are ready to welcome the first team in the next few minutes.
04:35
While we wait for the presentation of the officials, Laurence, what are we watching?
04:39
What are the technical elements for this free program?
04:42
Absolutely. So, a program of 4 minutes, plus or minus 10 seconds.
04:47
And among the elements that we will see, an artistic element, either a circle or a wheel.
04:55
Subsequently, we will have a creative element, which will be a lifting element.
05:00
Subsequently, we will have a technical element, which will be a group lift.
05:04
Two different elements of intersection.
05:07
Angle intersection is not allowed because it was the intersection required for the short program.
05:15
So, we will see a wheel intersection, a box intersection, a triangle intersection.
05:22
So, a lot of variety, a lot of possibilities for the different skaters.
05:26
Subsequently, we will have a movement element, with changes of movement between the Arabesques and the Billmonds.
05:32
A lot of variety.
05:34
There is the non-stop element. Yesterday, the turns counted.
05:37
Today, the turns will not count, but it will be the different key points that will count.
05:44
We will have a couple element, a pivot block element, which will be either in the form of a pyramid or a diamond.
05:51
It is a required element, and it is new this season.
05:55
And finally, we will have the vault element among the elements of the free program.
06:00
So, a well-filled program, and we will try to highlight the creativity at the level of the different teams.
06:08
So, this is really what is encouraged.
06:10
A lot more elements than yesterday in the short program.
06:13
Yesterday, we were more in a technical program, where we really had no room for error.
06:19
Not that the teams have room for error today either.
06:22
We know that they are all fighting for their place in the World Championships, for as high as possible at the top of the podium.
06:30
But, as you say, we will perhaps see more creativity.
06:33
We will perhaps see more of the personality of our teams through the different elements.
06:39
Yes, absolutely.
06:41
So, the Canadian Championships are very important since it is one of the only competitions in which the three teams will face each other.
06:51
Skating Canada takes this into consideration for the choice of the two teams for the World Championships.
06:57
But then the teams start their season at the international level in the coming weeks.
07:02
The Supremes have three internationals ahead of them.
07:07
They will have the Dresden Cup in Germany from January 24 to 25.
07:12
Then they will go to the US International Classic in Boston on February 6 and 7.
07:17
And finally, they will finish at the Budapest Cup in Hungary on March 15 and 16.
07:23
For Nova, it will be the US International Classic from February 6 to 7.
07:28
And then the Light Cup in the Netherlands.
07:38
Go!
07:54
Excuse me, I was interrupted by our famous sizzle.
07:58
So, I was saying, Nova will go to the US International Classic in Boston on February 6 and 7.
08:04
And then the Light Cup in the Netherlands on February 20 and 30.
08:08
Nexus, for their part, will go to the French Cup.
08:12
And they will be at the Light Cup in the Netherlands at the same time as Nova on February 20 and 23.
08:19
So, as I said, we start the international season.
08:23
We break the ice here for a first competition.
08:26
The three together.
08:28
They participated in the Woodstock competition a little earlier this season.
08:32
The Supremes, due to an injury, withdrew from the free program.
08:37
So, today we will see the outcome of the three teams that compete for these two places at the World Championships.
08:46
Tonight, in 100,000.
08:49
Yes, really, it will be hot, these results.
08:53
Yesterday, we were full of surprises.
08:56
We had a magnificent performance from our Canadian champions, the Supremes.
09:01
But we can say the same about the four teams.
09:04
Yesterday, really beautiful performances.
09:06
On the ice, we see the Black Gold team from Alberta and Yukon, who are warming up.
09:13
They have a little two-minute warm-up to get the ice out well.
09:19
And since they don't have, like in other disciplines, a warm-up time, all the teams do it together on the ice.
09:26
So, it's a little two minutes before getting on the ice.
09:30
To open the event.
09:32
They had the right to an official practice at the beginning of the day.
09:35
Yes.
09:36
Where the music plays twice.
09:38
They can choose to play a whole program.
09:42
But that two minutes is there to maybe do one or two individual elements that you want to do to feel good.
09:49
For me, it was breathing.
09:52
It was making little hearts, feeling the ice.
09:57
I also took a moment to spot my people on the ice.
10:02
My little lucky charms.
10:04
To have a certain confidence with people who were there for me.
10:09
So, in a crowd as full as tonight, I think I would have had a hard time finding my people.
10:17
Yes, indeed.
10:18
But as you say, see your landmarks, see your people, of course.
10:21
Also see the landmarks on the ice.
10:24
The official practices in the morning are not necessarily always on the ice of competition.
10:29
And in synchronized skating, the landmarks are very important.
10:33
Place the patterns on the ice.
10:36
So, skaters will also go and place their little landmarks.
10:41
Absolutely.
10:42
I discussed with the Discipline skaters who were wondering if the logo was perfectly centered or not.
10:50
So, they open the competition of Alberta and Yukon Black Gold.
11:00
This team is coached by Jamie Kozunic and Kim Boorman.

The ice is broken for Black Gold, who are in their first senior Canadian championship.
15:37
Yes, absolutely.
15:39
So, the Elite 12 category that joins the senior category this year.
15:44
They are in the senior junior Canadian championship among the greats.
15:48
What a pride for a team from Western Canada.
15:52
I want to say, I joined them a little bit in the level of difficulty,
15:58
because I was part of the transition from the Nova Open team to the senior,
16:03
the year we decided to change category.
16:05
And it's difficult because it's full of new elements that we learn.
16:10
Reach, couple elements, high level of difficulty.
16:14
Well, there's a little mistake in the death spiral.
16:19
But it's so many elements that are demanding to learn.
16:23
In a synchronized skating team, the team is never the same from one year to the next.
16:28
On the other hand, we have veterans who are there from the previous year,
16:32
who can help, share their learnings that they had in the previous years.
16:38
And we already have a long way to go on the elements that are made.
16:43
Here we see a range of groups.
16:45
The team did not choose to go for the highest level.
16:48
We stayed at a level 2 of difficulty to ensure safety.
16:53
It's super important.
16:55
If we want the team to grow and gravitate around the levels of difficulty,
17:03
we have to do that.
17:04
I want to say, a bite at a time.
17:06
And that's what they did.
17:07
Here we see the vaults, a few small mistakes.
17:10
Sometimes it's elements that take less time.
17:15
So we may have put more time in the ranges,
17:18
in the things of high difficulty, because they are required elements.
17:21
But we know the vaults in dance, we do 20-30 minutes a day.
17:26
So when we are limited in training and we have elements of this level of difficulty,
17:31
like the death spirals that we see on the screen.
17:34
It's really hard to do, Laurence.
17:35
These are elements of different disciplines.
17:38
We saw them do a jump, we saw them do the spiral, the portés, the vaults.
17:42
You really have to be a complete skater to succeed.
17:48
Absolutely.
17:49
And I want to say, in recent years,
17:51
the levels of difficulty in synchronized skating have increased year after year.
17:56
We are no longer in the same place as pre-pandemic.
18:00
So for this new team to do the jump in the senior,
18:04
my God, I am so impressed.
18:06
I tell them, hats off.
18:08
I tell them to be resilient, to continue to persevere.
18:11
Because I think it's great to have a team of this level in the West.
18:16
It's been a very, very, very, very long time since there has been a senior team.
18:21
So it allows skaters from this region to be able to compete at this level.
18:28
There you go.
18:30
Now that the pressure has dropped after the competition,
18:33
we can really have fun.
18:35
Go see the other competitors after.
18:38
The Black Gold team, who had 67.71 points at the competition a little earlier,
18:44
a few weeks ago, at the Woodstock competition.
18:48
So their goal will certainly be to improve their score,
18:53
to build, to have better levels,
18:56
to have better scores from the judges,
18:58
better program components.
19:00
I'm sure we're going to beat this score.
19:04
I'm sure we're going to beat this score tonight.
19:08
Those are certain.
19:10
They have really worked and developed several of their elements
19:13
over the last few weeks.
19:15
And I think it's going to be rewarded tonight.
19:17
Yes.
19:20
The technical panel, which is currently reviewing a few levels,

19:28
The score for Black Gold.
19:30

19:32

19:34
So their mission is accomplished to improve the score.
19:37
127.8 points.
19:40

19:41
In the first round, we see surprised, happy faces.
19:47
