00:04This debate is about the quantity of work.

00:08My point is, we have to focus on the quality of work, not on the quantity of work.

00:13It's not about 48, 40 hours, it's not about 70 hours, it's not about 90 hours.

00:19What output are you doing even if it's 10 hours?

00:22If you're not spending time at home, if you're not spending time with friends,

00:26if you're not reading, if you don't have time to reflect,

00:30how will you bring the right inputs into making a decision?

00:33There's no such thing as a work-life balance.

00:35There is something where it's not about balancing two things.

00:40You make good decisions if you have a holistic life.

00:43Ask me what's the quality of my work.

00:45Don't ask me how many hours I work.

00:47There is a need for this conversation because, you know,

00:52corporate leaders have created wealth and created millions of jobs in India.

00:57The young have their own understanding of how they want to lead their lives

01:02and that is leading to a lot of debate as well.

01:04You may be aware about work-life balance

01:07and there are prescriptions on 70-hour work weeks, 90-hour work weeks.

01:12How do you address something like that?

01:13You know, what is your idea of this balance and how much is too much?

01:18You know, I said as a audience me,

01:20this sawal yeh toh aana hi hai aaj, koi na koi mujhe poochega yeh sawal.

01:28I have huge respect for Mr. Narayan Murthy and others,

01:31so let me not… let me not get this wrong.

01:36But I have to say something, I think this debate is in the wrong direction

01:43because this debate is about the quantity of work.

01:47My point is we have to focus on the quality of work, not on the quantity of work.

01:54So it's not… it's not about forty-eight… forty hours,

01:57it's not about seventy hours, it's not about ninety hours.

02:00What output are you doing even if it's ten hours?

02:04You can change the world in ten hours.

02:05I have always believed that you have to have leaders

02:11and people in your company who make wise decisions,

02:16wise choices.

02:18So the question is,

02:19which kind of mind makes the right choices and right decisions?

02:24And I think a mind that is exposed to holistic thinking,

02:28that is open to inputs from around the world,

02:32that is… that's why I'm such a votary of liberal arts.

02:36I think even if you are an engineer, even if you are an MBA,

02:39you must study art, you must study culture.

02:42The MC was very kind that we support art and culture, why?

02:45Why am I making shareholders pay for that?

02:47Because I think you make better decisions when you have a whole brain,

02:52when you are informed about arts, culture,

02:54that's when you make a good decision.

02:56If you don't… if you're not spending time at home,

03:00if you're not spending time with friends,

03:01if you're not reading, if you're not… if you don't have time to reflect,

03:05how will you bring the right inputs into making a decision?

03:09Let's take our business, you make a car.

03:11We have to decide what a customer wants in a car.

03:15If we are only in the office all the time,

03:17we are not with our families, we are not with other families,

03:20how are we going to understand what people want to buy?

03:22What kind of car do they want to sit in?

03:24So that is why I'm a big votary.

03:26I'm not going to say you need to work so many hours or that.

03:29Often you have to be in a tunnel just to complete a project or a title or there's a crisis,

03:34but you should not be in a tunnel every time.

03:36And Gandhiji said, open your windows, let the air… you know, let the air in.

03:41So I definitely think there's no such thing as a work-life balance.

03:45There is something where you… it's not about balancing two things.
